Strategy to obtain US Amex

Has anyone ever tried using Apple Pay connected to a Chase card (or other US card) to buy Coles Gift Mastercsards?

And are these giftcards useable overseas?

Make sure you tick box for small letters and brochures in your us address
Can be difficult if it’s your first card . Easier if you have previous cards . Even expired ones .

Should not be a problem

I believe no prepaid card can be used overseas .

For those of you with a California mail forwarding address, are you all afraid that you may have to pay state taxes ? Especially if you earned interest from a savings or checking account , capital gains from share investments etc ?

I bought a bunch of Coles MC using my Amex US back in March when Coles had 10% promo on these.

I was able to use TCN restaurant eGC at Starbucks in AKL.

Will be interested to hear how you go.

Tempted to just stay with Chase as they are simply amazing at dealing with international customers, but some of Citi's transfer partners are appealing (eg Turkish, Cathay, Choice).
Called in today . After a long wait said it’s under process and I’ll receive a response in 7-10 days . Meanwhile planetexpress I informed me a letter has arrived from Citi . I wonder if it’s the same letter requesting proof of address , itin etc

Thanks for the update.

Starting to reconsider my plan for the Premier as it would put me at 4/24 until next year, and I want to save a slot for any blockbuster offers that come up this year (eg the potentially new Citi Strata cards).

But I'm eager to diversify away from Chase & Amex. Might try an AA business card from either Citi or Barclays as it is easy to get good use out of their miles.

Sounds like you have to be prepared for a long wait with Citi. I've been spoilt by Chase. Apply & approve in one day, card shipped by international courier the next day, in your hands 2-3 days later.

Citi wants a copy of the ITIN by post? How quaint.

I would email a copy to Citi. They do have an email address, don’t they?

In 2020, I received that letter via email. It asked me to post to their address and after calling them, they told me to email it to [email protected]. You can try that email or call them to confirm. Took them 2 business days to approve. This is pretty much an approval I think.

Thanks .i has already emailed to that address .hence surprised to receive this letter .

I was approved for a US Amex and it was sent to myUS and disappeared. I rang Amex to ask for one to be sent to Australia. I now have to go on Notarycam and show my passport before it’s approved. I am having problems connecting with them and making an appointment. Does anyone have any tips?

Was it your first Amex ? No tips . Just need to make an online appointment at a strange hour .

I was actually rejected . Said they will send. A letter put . I’m guessing the reason will be too many credit enquiries .

I found the process of making an appointment frustrating. Waiting in the virtual queue never went anywhere. Had to wait over a week for an appointment slot to open, but once I did it took all of 5 minutes.

Sorry to hear that. How many inquiries do you have in the last 6 months? Citi seem to require 0 or 1 for the Premier.

Would be at least 5-6

I found the virtual queue the easiest option. It took over an hour but I was watching tv just waiting for the notary to come in. The process was about 5 minutes. I have an SSN and long US credit history. For me it was verifying my ID.

Looks like my Equifax (EQ) report will fix itself shortly. Looking to attach my ITIN to a credit card for the first time.

My previous application to Chase that resulted in a decline hasn't resulted in a hard pull on EQ which is interesting and potentially helpful. A similar thing happened with C1 VX which did not result in a hard pull either.

Unfortunately I'm in the pop-up jail for Amex meaning that I can't seem to receive any SUBs (I've tried the 90K + $200 referral). I have a feeling this might be related to the Green card I obtained back in December and it has a 6 month spending period so that might have an impact on it from some data points I've read. I've heard people who applied via Resy got around it so I'll give that ago later.

C1 is happy to pre-approval me for SV1 and that was a card that I planned to get but no SUB. I might give the SUB-ed version a go and see what happens.

Very few options since Amex won't budge and C1 is only pre-approving a non-SUB product.

Does anyone else have any recommendations/thoughts?
