I'm not sure, however I do know that, when I purchased currency at Tesco (supermarket in the UK), it coded as cash - a lot of them have currency conversion centres which are run by Travelex (I think), so they're essentially a separate merchant (Travelex by Tesco). Tesco used to (maybe still do) have a credit card which treated those specific cash transactions as purchases though, so while I lived there I had that CC and used it for that reason. I don't think Coles or Woolies offer anything similar! That's good to know! I wonder if there is any way to buy foreign currency in Australia and have it code as something else? I need some Indonesian and maybe some Turkish currency. I need to pay the guides in cash.
I haven't obtained cash other than by ATM at destination for a long time, I think Auspost can do it but I'd guess they'd make you pay by cash, or at best debit card (or if they do accept CC, it'd code as either cash or Government and not earn points).
Personally, I'd just make sure you've got a decent bank account and withdraw cash at your destination. ING Orange Everyday would be my recommendation, as not only is there no forex or cash advance/ATM fees, they refund the ones which the foreign ATMs charge (up to 5 per month, if you meet the necessary criteria). Then just use any ATM at the airport, make sure you reject DCC (accept the charge only in their local currency, not their kind offer to convert to AUD at a terrible rate) and accept any ATM service charge, which will be refunded a couple of days later by ING.
There are a few ways around cash advance transactions, but none which are simple, and most involve multiple products.
