Strategy to obtain US Amex

I didn’t look at the form name to be honest. I just said I need to provide my itin and they sent me the form

The reason I ask is because a while back there was a W9 form discussion and somewhere on it it says Under penalty of perjury I certify I am a US person blah blah etc. Not sure there is a need to sign a w9 if you can just add to amex.

Just looked up a W9. Definitely not one of those. It was an HSBC form. The email called it International MDA for ITIN/Tax Status Update

I have a Hilton Aspire card

The AF has just fallen due and I don’t feel like I get sufficient (if any) value from the card. I also have the US Plat.

Was thinking that I might close the Aspire card but I seem to recall it being suggested that closing cards is a bad idea in the US. Could anyone please remind me why or correct me if that’s wrong. Thanks

Was the aspire your first card? Main issue is that it reduces the AVG age of your credit history.

Surprised you don't get to maximise the value out of the card.

Can downgrade it to the no annual fee Hilton card via chat.

Downgrade to surpass or free one

Thanks. Yes, it was my first card. Ahh, I see. Must confess, I don’t stress on the credit history because I’m not in the market for a portfolio of cards because I’m not prepared to get an ITIN.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a shame. Travel a fair bit for work but mainly use Bonvoy. Did try and access a Hilton Lounge in Australia once but was denied because the room was booked & paid for under the contract

Closer to home I tend to book IHG because of the Ambassador programme.

Just phoned Amex. They said I’m not eligible for the Aspire SUB as I’ve already had the Surpass one! That’s not right is it?

They also said I’ve been flagged as misuse of welcome offers! I’ve only had two cards (Surpass and Gold)

You'll need to provide more context.

Were you calling about applying for a new card? Or a card you have already been approved for (and were checking the SUB)?

The misuse stuff is just standard pop-up jail nomenclature.

I applied for aspire. Got PUJ message. So tried again via incognito and got no message but had to contact them to provide further info.

That's normal for the reps to say that. If your application processed without receiving the pop-up, there's a 95% chance you'll get the SUB if you are approved for the card and meet the minimum spend in the required timeframe.
