Strategy to obtain US Amex

Has anyone added an additional card to one of their US AMEX cards? I have an offer of 10k points for adding an additional card holder on my amex gold. I could add P2 but she doesnt have a SSN or ITIN so it may not be possible? It says I can provide the SSN/ITIN later upon card activation. Will they claw back points if we never provide it?

Thanks in advance
I did - and got the you must provide within 30 days message - queried this with Amex and said if you don’t have either you can provide passport number

Some DPs:

I hadn't heard back from AMEX after ~10 days, so phoned them and asked for an update. Unfortunately, this wasn't sufficient for AMEX. I asked what constituted a "utility bill", but they couldn't give me examples - just that it was one of the categories of accepted ID. I'll have to wait until the US HSBC account is opened.

Interestingly, they only want to confirm my full name, not my residential address.

I called HSBC USA today after hearing nothing back from them (application made ~9 days ago). The woman on the phone was confused by the status of my account, as it was "Pending" but didn't specify why. After putting me on hold and calling the account opening team to check, she confirmed that it was pending because I had opened by AU HSBC account less than 30 days ago. Apparently once that period is over and I call back, they will open the account.

Hopefully I'll have a BofA account open in a fortnight or so; so will wait for a statement to generate and then go back to AMEX. Out of interest, does anybody know how long they will keep an application in a pending state while they wait for documents to be provided?
I had this and eventually manage to persuade both HSBC and Amex to do a 3 way call to confirm my name - push for this if you don’t want to wait

What's your non-driver ID and how did you get it?
I didn’t get it unfort so will need to be another time. They open up appointment slots on Fridays for the week ahead and they tend to go very quickly especially for the more popular central locations. If you are a “resident” of NYC can get a non driver ID (guess it’s a little like the ‘proof of age’ card in NSW. You can only get it by:
  • Being a resident of NYC
  • Making an appointment and turning up in person; and
  • Producing proof of residency (currently bank statement < 60 days old and AU passport currently suffice)
I was trying to do this as C1 wanted a US government issued ID document (and wouldn’t accept AU passport as government issued document) no matter how politely I asked.

Are there any DPs for others getting accepted by C1 other than by going down this route?

Chase said they don’t accept these documents but were fine with my AU passport. So YMMV.

Btw this is the site where I made my appointment:

Please report back if it works for you especially if it gets you to ‘yes’ with C1.

I don't want to celebrate while others are mourning the Qantas changes, but these changes show the outsized value of holding a US Amex Biz Plat.

Under the new Qantas chart, a return Australia-London classic award in business class will cost: 332K + $1775.

If you value that $1775 in carrier charges at even 0.5c/point, the Qantas fare actually costs 332K + 88K = 420K.

The retail price for this type of flight is around $9-13K AUD. Say you can find it for $11K (pretty easy). That's $6.8K USD.

Book with a US Amex Biz Plat for 680K points. Get a 35% rebate back = 447K MR.

Remember this is a paid fare so you earn full points.

Say you're a Qantas Plat. You will currently earn an additional 62K Qantas points, but that appears to be going up even more after July. Subtract them from the 447K MR and your net cost is 385K points.

And you earn full status credits! And you don't have to fight for impossible classic award availability!!

It is literally cheaper to use US MR to buy a paid fare than it is to buy a classic award fare.
Thanks for this post. I was considering culling my Business Plat as the AF is quite steep but might hold onto it now - didn’t realize it had this benefit. I imagine finding award availability might give the best outsized value outcome. This is a nice alternative otherwise.

Has anyone tried to use the Adobe credit for instance? I have an Acrobat annual subscription but paid for it with my Aussie CC but this would reduce it from an eye watering $A383 to something closer to $A133. Do you use it as payment method for your AU subscription or do you need to change to a US based subscription to trigger the rebate?

How long ago did you get your first Amex? Mine was only August so I’m wondering if I’m just trying too soon

My ITIN was only set up in Oct and only notified Amex of the number in Jan too
I have got my ITIN not long ago. Should I call Amex US to let them know my ITIN details? I got the Hilton Aspire through Amex GT a few months ago.

No harm. I uploaded mine via a link someone shared here. Just this week I asked them to confirm they have it and they said it’s logged in the SSN field on my accounts.

Not sure if anyone has previously mentioned this. I can't seem to find an answer. I just got ITIN and I have Hilton Aspire Amex card.
How do I accumulate my US credit score so I can apply for Chase credit cards?
Do I need to start with Capital One debit card/credit card first?

I’d suggest waiting c. 12 months before applying for Chase or C1…..

DP re HSBC Premier
P2 opened HSBC Premier account late last year, have 1 statement.

Applied of US HSBC, was requested the reason for the account. When I queried why this was necessary as she was Premier was asked for statement and RM name.

I had been emailed by an RM so just gave his name mentioning he was my husbands and out joint HSBC account statement.

He asked for an individual account statement, sent through and account opened that evening.

The Statement shows it's premier.

So took she was successful after first AU statement.

now i need to reapply as my app got rejected.

this wasn't on the application which i also said for investing, i just checked and they were asking for evidence i qualify under this such as sales contract, mortgage etc.

i queried why it was needed and then was asked to provide RM and AU statement.

I will be getting a call from HSBC Premier in a few hours time, as i told them i want to open a Malaysian HSBC Premier account.

Apart from asking why i want to open a Malaysian account, what other questions do they normally ask ? And how long does the call go for ?

I’m just in my way back from NY and catching up on everything. I thought my experience might be interesting to some.

I went to get my non driver ID so I could have another crack at applying with C1. Unfort I went on the wrong day though they checked and said my AU passport and HSBC US statement showing my NY address would have worked to get it.

I applied for a Citi checking account in branch and will look to meet the activity criteria to get the $325 bonus (the others were too high a commitment for me and I felt the FX risk might not be covered by the bonus. They would only let me open this account in branch even tho I’m already a Citi customer so good to tick this off.

I also went into a Chase branch and opened a checking account with $300 bonus so I’ll work on getting that when I get home.

The banker did tell me that they don’t accept the NY ID card so not sure if that also means C1 won’t.

I applied for CSP in branch and have the banker that helped me trying to push it through. Will be good to get it this time so the Ink business cards are then on my radar. Please remind me which Ink card is the one to get now?

Hope my experience is helpful.

Are you still in NYC / USA ?

If so, you can go to a Capital One cafe and ask one of the bank staff members to help you open a checking account and apply for a C1 credit card. I think it would be much easier if done in a branch. There are heaps of Capital One cafes in NYC.

By the way, when you opened the checking accounts with Chase and Citi, did they ask for any utility bills ? I assume you showed them your passport and a bank statement ?

And finally, when you go to your bank appointments, do you tell the tellers that you have an appointment ? Or you just sat down and waited to be called by the banker ?

It may be a regular call to assist with opening .
Reason for opening will be most important , with supporting proof for same .
also possibly local Malaysian address .
What is the benefit of a Malaysian account ?

Try and link your ITIN to your Amex .

GTed my first US Amex in July, I read somewhere after 6 statements were generated, I could see a FICO score, and then I could apply for 2nd Amex card over the phone.
I now have 6 x statements, but still no FICO score, do I have to get a ITIN for my second card?
Thanks,

Applied for Chase Biz CC and got rejected (expected). Called for reconsideration explained 1 account is Authorized User account and I am not financially responsible for it. Chase specialist advised she could not do anything if rejection is related to 5/24 and Authorized User Account still counts.
I also have no Chase Business Checking Account.
Should I give up on reconsideration or is this another HUCA?

Can also add to this. I cannot see any of my AMEX accounts on EQ. Contacted both EQ and AMEX. EQ asked me to contact AMEX, and then AMEX told me that they do report to all three credit bureaus, and that the issue might be on EQ´s side. However, AMEX also mentioned that it might be due to having an ITIN and not SSN. Yet, the accounts show up on EX and TU.
Sounds exactly like me - same discussions when I called

You may have a FICO score. Why do you believe that you don’t? If you are looking for it on the Amex website, they no longer show it.

My FICO appeared on the Amex site after 8 months, but they stopped showing that some months ago.

after clicking view my FICO score on the Amex website, they gave me an "unable to process your request" error. Maybe I should call them to find out. thanks for your reply.
