I will be celebrating my birthday mid August and would like to take a flight from Gold Coast/Brisbane on a friday, returning on a Monday. As it is winter in Aus can anyone suggest a good destination/airline, or would an overseas trip be possible in that time frame? Dont mind flying as long as we have one full day and night at destination.

I would head to FNQ to thaw out, overseas is possible, KUL or SIN is a short and cheap hop ex OOL.

Fiji, Vanuatu. Both are close but flight times may not suit.

Admittedly I'm a bit biased but how about flying to NTL and go to the Hunter Valley?
Its beautiful in winter and there's a few great restaurants and excellent accommodation options.

The warmest place I can see is SIN.

DRW (though hotels are pricey), day trip to Litchfield NP etc. Or go to SIN.

FNQ still too nippy for my liking in August, and I'm from CBR!!!

And Singapore is an awesome city. That would be my pick.

Singapore!!! I did a 3 day trip to SIN and had a ball! Shame you didn't have longer, you could hit up LAX. ;)

I was going to suggest you incorporate the Ekka Day public holiday (Wednesday 15 August) into a long weekend by taking off the Mon/Tues or Thu/Fri but you're Gold Coast based. Any chance you work in Brisbane and have the potential to take two days of leave for a five day weekend?

Singapore for a decent long weekend. Warm, no visa required for aussies, dollar is strong, and every hotel chain you could want, to facilitate MRs. Except SPG. Who'd want to stay at the Sheraton ;)

+ another for SIN....staying at the Four Seasons.

NAN is a good choice.

Going there from about 20th Aug for 10 days.

3 to 4 hour flight app $800 return stay at denaru Island and they have both a Hilton or a Sheraton and defrost

I love Singapore but I'm not sure it would be the best option for a long weekend getaway ex QLD. It is likely to be uncomfortably hot, has no beach, long flight from Queensland, plus on average it would be amongst the world's most expensive cities for hotels and mostly the hotels are bad value for what you get vs other cities in Asia e.g. BKK, HKG. Unless you want to spend the weekend shopping I would suggest trying elsewhere.

Personally for a long weekend I'd say Fiji would be your best bet. It's a short flight, the weather should be quite good in August, you can sit by the beach in the sun, and I think you'd find it much better value for time, effort and money.

Also I'm really not sure about the Four Seasons Singapore... maybe I was missing something but I stayed there a few weeks ago and thought it was really average. It is terribly dated and could easily pass for an early nineties era Sheraton. The straw that broke that camel's back was when they offered ridiculously, painfully slow free internet as part of Amex FHR but they try to charge for the 'premium' internet that is actually useable. At a $20/night backpackers hotel I could understand this, but at a Four Seasons it just seemed that they were nickel and diming their way into brand-ruining mediocrity.

I ended up leaving and going to the Ritz Carlton which was marginally more expensive but far, far better. The most spectacular views of the Singapore skyline, perfect location, and the kind of incredible service where they remember your name and favourite drink when you walk into the club lounge. Anyway, IMHO there are MUCH better hotels in Singapore than the Four Seasons - the Ritz Carlton and Intercontinental would be my suggestion. Even the Fullerton is quite good and you can sometimes get some very decent deals there.

First world problems I know...

PQQ is also an easy DJ flight from Brisbane- plenty to do & could see the new snow leopard display at Billabong Wildlife Park. Plenty of room options on Wotif etc

There is also a St Regis in Orchard Road under SPG which is apparently quite good (but I have not tried it myself)

True it's no FS HKG however, for a 2 night stay (long weekend) I really like the location & easy access to Orchard Road.

SIN is perfect for a short stay as is HKG or BKK.
