There is also a St Regis in Orchard Road under SPG which is apparently quite good (but I have not tried it myself)

The St Regis is a bit of a walk from the main area of Orchard Rd (not an issue if you use taxis). I know they are opening a couple more hotels soon too- Westin near the CBD/MBS and possibly something on Sentosa

The SPG hotel on Sentosa will be a W.

Thanks everyone. Actually checking out Vanautu at the moment, it is cheaper to go for 5 nights , with a direct flight from Brissie on Tues, returning Sunday evening, some great specials and travelling time is minimal. Im able to organise extra days off which is a bonus:p

If you decide to go the best restaurant in Port Vila is L'Houstalet. Not sure about the bat but his food is great. It's where the locals eat

Singapore would be amongst the world's most expensive cities for hotels and mostly the hotels are bad value for what you get

Say what? have you been to Europe (or Australia for that matter!) and stayed in hotels? :) SIN is pretty much par with BKK and HKG for price and value - they are all competing for the same market really.

Tower Lodge, pricey but worth every cent.

+1

Roberts Restaurant (at Tower) were recently having a Sunday lunch special $49pp for 3 courses including a glass of wine. It's not on their website but worth enquiring about if you go - fab food.

I will be celebrating my birthday mid August and would like to take a flight from Gold Coast/Brisbane on a friday, returning on a Monday. As it is winter in Aus can anyone suggest a good destination/airline, or would an overseas trip be possible in that time frame? Dont mind flying as long as we have one full day and night at destination.

My suggestion would definitely be FNQ Cairns. A quick two hour flight and you will be in sunshine with temperaturers during the day of 28-30 degrees. Hotels are of excellent standard, airport minutes from town. Free use of the Esplanade pool, fantastic restaurants for all.
There is so much to do in Cairns, Reef trips, Rainforest experiences, Zoo's, Beautiful Northens beaches, and one of the most scenic drives to Port Douglas. I know so because we live here!!!

Auspal, I'd plump for Pacific Islands or FNQ. Look at the amount of time you'd spend travelling if you chose SIN BKK or HK......time that could more profitably be spent in the sun!

I've just made a booking for Vanautu, very cheap flight, direct from Brisbane to Port Vila, about 2.5 hrs flight. Excited!!! Just made the special offer in time, which closes 12th August, the day we fly back to Brissie. Thanks for your help and advice everyone.

Nice one, try and stay on one of the outlying islands rather than in Vila itself if you can.
