Superannuation Discussion + market volatility

Scratching head……

IFL looks a raging red hot buy buy to me

Just got off the phone to the broker who was extremely negative and in the process confirmed my view that he is a goose……

otoh.. a fool and his money et al..

I dont use brokers - use online trading. An awful lot of them are geese. Had a really good one, but after he retired I moved.

I am very counter cyclical and love buying out of favour shares. IFL does have a few issues to resolve. Good luck with your decision. :)

Super down....again. Sigh :(

Indeed and it's all looking a bit ordinary atm.
I had expected a froth and bubble toppy market peak in the 6's for xmas.
I then revised my hopes to a festive season rebound to high 5's or better
I now think I will just stop thinking about it and have a glass or five of plonk……

Really.. the market is crazy.. what has (actually) happened to cause all this…crazy .. mutter mutter…...

Chess is a very useful tool and the broker is also useful (as long as you don't ask for advice)
The odd transaction , however is now attracting much higher fees .. so…..maybe….

Yup - only way to deal with it - drown our sorrows and wait ....

A friend phoned today to ask whether he should buy a certain share, or did I think it could go lower. I just laughed at him - of course it can go lower, but maybe it won't :)

I honestly think we are seeing the beginning of the next great depression. Too much geopolitical uncertainty not enough levers to get ourselves out of a hole like we did during the GFC. My super is all cash atm

When did you move it all into cash?-if it was 2 months ago, I tip my hat

Actually late January. I don't want to make this thread political but Trump imho is unstable and it was not hard to work out what was going to happen with his protectionist ideology and lack of impulse control . Throw in Brexit and China South Sea( which is the dormant firetorch here) and things were always going to get ugly. The sad thing is this was completely avoidable.

You are not wrong - with a half way competent President in terms of international matters I doubt we would be where we are.

Of course one of the problems for those of us who are living on our Super funds is that interest rates are truly pathetic......I have also made nice capital gains during the year and have realised those gains.

I have a few times during the past year evaluated my portfolio and the conclusion I kept coming to, was there was nothing I wanted to sell, so we shall see. If we genuinely fall into a Great Depression, then I will no doubt regret some of that, but I still don’t see that as the most likely scenario.

I did at Easter strongly advised Master FM to sell all his Google shares and sit on cash waiting for good buying opportunities, but he didn’t listen to me.

I cashed out most of our shares a week before the most recent fall, maybe 2 months ago now. Just checked and it was 28 September. But transferred a chunk into HESTA but I feel I have at least mitigated some of the pain but not all. And another chunk of BHP I sold probably a month ago - yep - 25th October. The timing was purely luck.

On 28 Sept all ords was 6300. By the time I sold BHP it was down to 5900 and in that time the BHP portfolio had fallen $9000.

That would be the IFL that may be excluded from managing super and go from one of the largest super managers to almost nothing?

Looking through my own super records, looks like you are about even (compared to leaving it in a growth fund) now with that choice. If things go any further down, you'll be ahead

I'm prepared to claim that I moved about 35% of my money to clash but unfortunately thought the market still had a way to go. Hindsight is always 20/20!

Bank hybrids of the Big 4 have hardly moved. If they start dropping sharply it would be an indicator that our financial sector is in for a rough time with many customers defaulting on their loans.

It is possible that the Big 4 banks could drop a couple of chairmen and CEOs in the next few weeks. I won’t mention names but I have heard rumours.
