Supermarket fuel discounts capped at 4c per litre

I am expecting a change in discount cycles because they stopped during the 45cents a litre offers.

I don't know what state you are in , but i can speak from a Sydney perspective , that the discount cycles does not change based on when the offers were released . Sydney, has had a regular cycle for nearly 18 months now of around 18-21 days from peak to bottom.

Adelaide. We don't have regular and predictable discount cycles anymore and haven't for quite some time.

I am more inclined to think of the 1,000's of independent service stations that have closed since these discounts started & the resultant damage done to those families. Sorry but I don't think for 1 minute that these are genuine discounts-I believe you are paying for them in many ways.

And even without them, fuel prices will continue to remain high, you'll still be paying more, and have less of a chance to save more... that's a loss.

I don't understand why people use petrol dockets. A typical car has a 60L tank. This equates to $2.40 a tank ($125/year). Less than a coffee. The discount is less if you buy from independents. Typically the saving between a woolies/Coles petrol docket and independent is 2c/L. So the saving is $1.20 ($63/year)

Landcruiser types save more as they get closer to the limit of 150L per transaction. $5 per fill of 125L. ($260/year 1 fill per week.)

I don't shop at W or C unless there is no other alternative.

You pay for the petrol saving many times over at W and C. And also through the demise of independents.

Qantas / fuel independents / buy Australian etc etc will lose when people buy according to price alone.

I think qantas needs to re-engage with Aussie public in a deeper way if it wants to survive. No airline can survive by only looking after premium passengers. Pushing average Y- flyer away to Nostar (JQ) does not engender loyalty. It seems that loyalty at QF is a one way street. QF Pax has to demonstrate loyalty by flying heaps before QF reciprocates with status. Management got to go. Unions got to go. Look after your Pax and your pax will look after QF and management and unions will get looked after. Not the other way around...

But you pay it whether you use petrol dockets or not ... and not everyone has a choice - the nearest "Independent" retailer is an IGA 6Km away.

Locally there are two stations, one an "independent", the other a "Safeway" - typically the independent's E10 matches the Safe 4¢ discount price.

Sadly the independent charges 2.2% CC fee ... :-|

True, but the more we shop at the majors the less choice we got. It's a death spiral.

I have noticed in a few cities that coles and WW have been trying to lift the price of fuel early in the cycle, whilst the independents have not lifted.

No one in Adelaide can count?:p:p:shock:

Runs and hides.

It seems not enough to notice the fuel discount cycle that I can count with the benefit of my quality education from Sir Joh, aka the mad peanut farmer.

I noticed one independent yesterday that hadn't lifted but I also saw a few non WW/Coles stations that had lifted the price. The petrol graph from the ACCC site looked strange during the week so I figured that the price was going to go up this weekend sometime.

Another government agency that needs closing that will save you more than anything in taxes

My uncle part owns a non co-branded petrol station (he owns the debt part - the other owner is rich and he owns the money part haha), he has a sign up to match the local coles discount but he couldn't afford anything over 4c a litre off. So when they were offering 6/8/20c off a lot of people were shopping on price and he lost a lot of money during those promotions. Not as much money as giving people money, but they don't have any profit on fuel as it is, they make their money on the store items.. so if people aren't coming into the store there is no one to upsell too. I think the ACCC decision does actually impact the independents because its not just about the fuel prices. Well my uncle says there is no profit to be made from selling fuel. But if he can keep up with the big guns in terms of prices he can keep the foot traffic that buy the 230% mark up items that allow him to survive. (He owns a BP, he is struggling financially).

I just saw a post on FB , where a targetted offer was spend $30 at WW online and receive 2000 QF Points ….. this will be the new playing field for WW & Coles(flybuys) in 2014.
