SYD airport hotel or city?

OK, bit the bullet and redeemed SYD-JNB in J, Thursday 15 June.

Last time I caught an international flight in SYD I stayed at the Aerotel, but that was an introductory special, and now the price for a night has increased significantly.

I'm coming from Melbourne and really don't want to have to wake up at an ungodly hour to make the connection so I'll be staying the night in Sydney. In the past I've always stayed in the CBD not the airport except for the Aerotel, and I really thought the room I got was the size of a coffin. Any suggestions? This is a 0930 flight so I want to have some sufficient time in the Qantas lounge to have some breakfast and prayers.

I am staying in SYD from QLD for a 6am EK departure to DUBAI. I chose the Stamford at the airport as I had a credit through Qantas hotels. Flying in March, will let you know how it is!

There’s a lot of hotels to choose from near the Stamford. Even though it’s the “Domestic” side, they probably all have airport shuttles to T1 but if they don’t Mascot train station is right there and two stops to T1. Plus easy access to the city by train if you’re filling in time the day/night before.

Thanks mate! Great info

Actually, I lied the Stanford’s a short stagger to the Domestic terminals and a bit further back to Mascot station. The Holiday Inn further north or something within a few minutes of Mascot would be my pick for T1 (if, and I meant to mention above, the Rydges wasn’t an option - which of course is right there).

Uber eats/menulog gives a few more options for food around the airport hotels. The area is industrial so little incentive to get out of the hotel. The zero stress of walking to the terminal from Rydges is worth $$.

I’m sure the residents of Mascot would take exception to that! 😁

But from Mascot station you‘re 15 mins away from Circular Quay and The Rocks. Or plenty of other eat streets in and around town - if you have time and interest.

Especially if flying in late and departing early. Bit of a no brainer if the price is right.

Yep. Thinking about Rydges, I have Star Alliance Gold so I can get a light dinner at the VA lounge the night before anyway.

Yeah, another for Rydges here...a little pricey, but stress-free convenience.
(We live in SYD, but still use it for early next-morning departures)

Yep. My mother used to stay at the nicer airport hotels in her own city for early next-morning departures or late night arrivals for her many travels. It depends on whether you can afford it. Since COVID, however, despite staying healthy, she's been almost completely house-bound and has never ventured outside a 100km radius.

If you are going to stay anywhere on the Domestic side and you have more than one person travelling then don't bother with the train - just Uber or use the shuttle.

The train is approx $12 per person....

I'm tossing up between the Pullman on the domestic side, or the Novotel on the International side (a good 10-15 min walk)

We prefer the Pullman as it’s a better overall property but we do tend to chop and change between the two. Novotel runs a shuttle bus or Uber fares are pretty cheap from either hotel

I would actually get a taxi/uber instead of the train from any of these hotels (and have done so). I think it's actually cheaper.

Don't even bother with one person. Taxi should be around $12 or less. I say taxi instead of uber as uber often has surge fees and/or you'll have trouble getting one to take you the short distance.

I'm actually going to waitlist a flight with SQ to Cape Town directly from Melbourne. If it clears I will cancel my Qantas redemption as it saves me a flight to Sydney and a domestic flight in South Africa. 99000 Krisflyer points isn't a bad deal to go all the way to Cape Town from Melbs.

I find from hotel to airport is fine but not the other way. We were sick of being rejected by taxis so just automatically use Uber now from airport to hotel
