16 hours in HKG is more than enough to go to some markets (not very cheap at the moment) and check out the city, visit a few bars or clubs, whatever your into really. The MRT to to the city is cheap, so for me 16 hrs in HKG is not wasted.

And as you say John lucky to get the days you wanted on an award :)

The plan is to stay in transit for a couple of hours and have a shower and change clothes, have some breakfast and possibly sleep. Then possibly get on a ferry and see Victoria Harbour and is there a cable car that goes up a hill somewhere to get views of the city?

Head back to airport around 8:00pm for 11:30pm flight to Perth.

It was really trying to get everything to fit in the exact time I wanted. In the end I was restricted in where I could depart the USA and how I would come back to Sydney.

I could have got into HKG at 5:00pm with BA and only had a 6:30 hour transit but QFs taxes and surcharges increased by ~$260. No thanks. I would rather have the 16 hours transit.

Decisions, decisions. Right or wrong? Who cares it is booked now....

Deranged? Nice insult! If I had a choice between an 8 hour flight or two 4 hour flights with a 2 hour transit I would take the transit anytime. Like I am going to do anything constructive for 2 hours at the destination.

I was out-of-line. My apologies. I have edited previous post to reflect that. Was having a bad day, and wasn't thinking too clearly at the time.

We will also have 16:30 hours connection in HKG and 8 hour connection in PER. Ahh the joys of trying to get awards seats on the exact dates required.

Given you're flying HKG-PER on QF, that means you'll be arriving early morning ;)

What day/date is that, and what were your plans for the day?

Central HK is quite small - you can walk to many of the main attractions or just catch the MTR a couple of stops for those things that are a bit apart. You can lunch at Soho, then walk along Wyndham street to the funicular that will take up to the top of Mt Victoria.

It is OK. No harm done. We are all different and prefer different things. I do not like long flights. I am OK on short(ish) flights but after about 5 hours in the air I start to get very anxious and can't wait for the time to pass. This is where I would prefer some time on the ground even if it is at an airport. The 10-14 hour flights are a real worry but manage to get through them eventually and thankfully there are only a few of these on a RTW.

Also I have my father with me and at 71 he is not the person to do the morning/afternoon/evening quick sightseeing tours. To be honest I also get lazy if I had to rush to get things done before departing. So the trade off was to get a few extra flights and spend some time in the lounge. Sure it may sound crazy but it provides some distraction from waiting around at the one airport for 8 hours for the next connection.

I think we arrive in PER ~7:20am on Friday 25 September and depart for SYD on the A330 ~14:30pm. The plan was to get to the domestic airport as I do not think we will clear immigration/quarantine before ~8:30am. It seems a waste to hire a car for ~4 hours but may end up doing this anyway. Not sure at this early stage.

Given it is a Friday, I will most likely be at work so that rules that out.

My experience on the HKG-PER flight is that I've been out on the curb 10 minutes after stepping off the plane so time shouldn't be an issue.

Use your free transfer to the domestic airport, and rent a car from there as it's slightly closer to the Swan Valley (about a 10-15 minute drive from there). 4 hours is more than enough to sample some of the fine cuisine and cellar doors in the area
