I remember using the Hazelton and Rex services from Sydney to Traralgon about fifteen years ago, and the subsequent services that Rex ran via CBR (and I think Brindabella also tried one, perhaps even one via Merimbula).

Anyone think there's a chance of these returning? Just reminiscing about some old flight memories.
 
With the more modern coach services and relatively good roads now around, I think such scheduled regional services can no longer be cost effective.

I remember one summer my older sisters flying on a fokker back to Melbourne in the late 60's from Merimbula; back then the road was a lot more torturous, especially the miles south of Eden.
 
I really enjoyed flying REX from CBR-SYD... those lambswool seat covers in the SAAb's were very comfy!... but now with Virgin in the mix as well I can't see them returning....(and now that I get my NZ status benefits on Virgin it would be a touch call NOT to fly them!)

Certainly the case for something like TGN-MEL, but SYD/CBR is a different question surely - it's still 8-10 hours on the road driving, and perhaps this is just an idiosyncracy but I can't think of anything worse than sitting on a coach for that long.

I also remember a time when TAM Airlines flew SYD-West Sale.

They are no longer cost effective because state governments dont regulate them with subsidies, VIC is the only state that has zero regulated intrastate flights, and a poor regional flight service as a result.
 
It's a shame that other than Melbourne there is pretty much no real aviation infrastructure in regional Victoria. Flights between regional centers and Syd / Mel would be great - although I agree it's hard to make cost effective these days.
