SYD Duty Free - iPad prices/availability?

I'm visiting Aus this month and am transiting CDG, DOH and CGK to get home for a xmas visit with family. Am looking to buy an iPad for the other half.

Ordinarily I'd do the tourist refund scheme (we live in the UK and have done for >7 years now, have done it a couple of times); but this time when heading out we don't have a long transit in Sydney int'l so I was looking ideally at getting one in either one of the other countries we visit, or ideally Sydney duty free on departure.

I was hoping anyone who's been through there recently might notice what their prices of iPads are (are they a true retail price minus GST in SYD departures), and/or their availability? Heinemann duty free online has a very small selection of models.

I noticed there looks to be a JB Hifi concession in duty free there, so gave them a call, the guy gave me a very wishy washy answer and said basically I need to see what they have and what prices they were (mirrors my experience with JB Hifi customer service of old...)

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I’m there in the morning, so I’ll try to have a look for you. Any model in particular?

There’s another recent thread on this exact topic. TRS is a better deal. I passed through SYD TRS yesterday around 11am. Pretty quick. Maybe 5 mins.

Just about to head to CGK and DOH. If I see Apple stuff, I’ll try and get a photo.

If you're in Oz for more than a few hours and can head into Sydney proper, could you do a click and collect order at the Apple Store in George St?

Qantas Marketplace is doing 10x points on Apple gift cards: Buy Apple Digital Gift Card | Qantas Marketplace
Then place the order on the Apple Education Store using said gift cards: Buy iPad
Finally, claim TRS on the way out...

Thanks and apologies. I tried searching for duty, iPad, iPhone (found an old iPhone one that turned into how to buy a cheaper one locally), but noted.

Very much appreciate any insight into pricing at those airports!!

Thank you.

Yeah we’ll be in Aus for a couple of weeks so are able to get it from a retail store, it’s the TRS step I’m a bit short on time, as we transit SYD from a domestic flight and if possible I’d like to avoid the potential TRS queue. (Unfortunately we couldn’t swing an earlier feeder flight which would make it fine)

I’ve had good experiences but also had to abandon it when the queue was all the way to the entry to the area and I’ve only had limited time.

I really appreciate the input and assistance!

$1616 duty free or $1625 @ Amazon requiring a pickup from Mascot and a TRS claim of $147.73, explains why I always walk with haste through Heinmann!
Thanks very much for the snaps @RooFlyer !
Even though it’s a bit more than pure duty free, I’m tempted due to the lack of faff/fuss, it’s a premium of about £38 over the pure duty free amount.

Criminal really but better than anywhere (inc VAT rebate) in Europe I’ve found

Really appreciate it

I didn’t notice anything in CGK, although I’m sure there’ll be something. DOH is a bit of a zoo tonight and not in the mood to browse but now you know the Oz DF prices, if you see something in either on your way over that’s better - go for it.

I did pick up an iPad years ago in SIN. They’d just released a new model and there was a sudden up-tick in the AUD so the super ended but still fine device was several $100 dollars cheaper!

But usually Apple products are set price. Easy to find the RRP by switching country on the Apple website.

Taking the iPad Pro 256GB as an example:

Duty Free $1616
Amazon $1625
Costco $1599
Officeworks with Costco price beat $1519

Call Officeworks to claim the price beat and order for pick up or delivery (as store stock is usually limited). Then, time permitting, claim TRS off the $1519 and you're looking at getting it down to $1381.

😯 I didn’t realise the market was that competitive in Aus!

Does OW actually price beat Costco? If not, the Costco price is already lower than duty free, so anything lower than that (ie a TRS claim) would be very much icing on the cake
