Hi All,

Having lots of fun (fun=obession) clocking up those SCs now that I've been gold for 3-4 months.

Have a trip coming up to Beijing in March.
All booked via Qantas website in V class (so I can upgrade via points if lucky).

SYD > HKG QF127 11:55 > 17:50
HKG > PEK KA906 19:00 > 22:10

PEK > HKG KA991 13:30 > 17:10
HKG > SYD QF128 20:10 > 08:05 (+1)

Questions:

1. SC earn. Mileage Monkey seems to indicate 30 SCs each way on QF & 20 SCs each way on Dragon Air = 100 SCs total. Does that seem correct ? Does the Dragin Air flight earn SCs even though it is a KA flight number vs a QF ?

2. Seat Selection - how do I pick seats on the Dragon Air flight ? When I try via QF website, the selection doesn't 'stick'.

3. Transfer time - seems very short at HKG. I presume the QF website wouldn't let us book a flight we can't connect to.

4. Anyone flown Dragin Air to PEK via HKG with any tips etc I need / should know ?

Thanks.

Have flown that leg a couple of times - which flight are you on?

Can't give you many tips - flight was OK without being spectacular.

I did miss a connection once after arriving late from MNL and had to wait 2.5hrs to catch last flight that day - so hope your connection works out for you.

I'm also still trying to do seat selection.
The booking reference from Qantas website seems to not be recognised by Dragon Air website.

3. Not sure what the MCT is a HKG but I have been able to book a 55 min connection - and made it with a glass of champagne drunk as well...

4. Cabin crew have tended to be young and fairly "perky" with surprisingly short skirts.

Re seat selection - call Dragon air and get them to tell you your booking reference based on your personal details.

I would say give QF a buzz. As Gold I never had to wait more then a couple of minutes on the phone and they have always been able to select seats for me.

Update ... just called Qantas. They were helpful.
In short ... they couldn't selected seats for me either. The selection wouldn't 'stick'.
So no-go on that front.

They did confirm 100 SCs return Syd to Beijing.

Call Cathay Pacific with your flight details and they will be able to give you your reference number for the KA flight.

Shrek has flown to PEK with them
a couple of times both J and Y also noticed the perky flight crew and was able to select seats via CX , status credits posted to his account without delay

Dragon Air are excellent. I've flown with them quite a few times (they are the only OW airline to fly into Dhaka from Hong Kong now that BA has stopped LHR to DAC).

I always purchase their J class fares to get the SC's, as their business class is only 10 to 20% more than economy! Last time I flew Hong Kong to Dhaka return (2008) the J class fare was about $900 - not bad for getting 160SC! It was a 4 hour flight each way.

I do this same route with Cathay and DragonAir, with a transit time of 55 mins. Always works perfectly.

Trip update ...

The transfer at HKG to Dragon Air was fast and efficient (Qantas issued boarding pass in Sydney with a pre-allocated isle seat - was able to select an exit row at that point as well).

The Qantas flight into HKG was 1 hr late. Dragon Air held the flight to PEK and had a person waiting as I came off the Qantas flight with a sign. I was escorted to the security transfer point.

The Dragon Air flight was fine but nothing special (economy). Food was nice and service was efficient. Toilets were a mess within 5 mins into the flight - too many people "missing" the actual toilet bowl doing number 1's.

I'm now waiting on the Dragon Air flights to credit (the Qantas return flights have credited) as I really do want the SCs to help retain Gold now that I have the "SC Fever".

Lastly, Beijing ... what an amazing city.

Welcome to China. If you want a really special experience try Air China or China Eastern out of Beijing / Shanghai in economy on an 11 hour flight to Melb - you just gotta see those toilets to believe them.

Aint it just the best - IMHO Beijing slaughters Shanghai - others will hold a different view - will be in Beijing Thursday night - first stop The Den for a couple of quiet ones - then my favourite Peking Duck restaurant - god I love Beijing.

Just an aside for last 3 years we have been able to purchase full range of CUB beers in The Den in Beijing - Crown Lager RMB25 - less than $4 - go figure.

The Den is also a good place to watch the AFL Grand Final if you are ever there at that time. I watched the Swans/Eagles game there a few years back and it was a riot

Ok for those tha flown Dragon Air, how long has the transaction taken to post to your QFF account?

And for bars, Maggie's in Beijing is a very cool place with a great new band that do cover songs exceptionally well.

Plenty of rosy-cheeked hostesses as well - if memory serves me correctly

Yes that is something I noticed myself. Seems to be part of the uniform dress standard for Dragon Air crew.

Side note re SC's ... they've just posted. 20 SCs each way discount economy & 617 points each way. So me very happy with extra 40 SCs to feed my addiction :p
