First time poster so please forgive any ignorance or stupidity ;)

I've travelled domestically on QF staff travel, but this will be my first attempt at travelling international, and I was hoping to take advantage of the discounts using staff travel. At the same time, I want to try and minimise the possibility of being stuck overseas without a way to my destination. So I was hoping to get some advice...

The plan is (around May next year) to fly SYD - LAX on QF. Then somehow get my way to MEX (possibly AA from LAX - MEX via DFW)

* SYD - LAX (QF) I've read Wednesdays are good days to fly, weekends are terrible. I'll pay for the potential upgrade as high as I can so to maximise the potential of getting a flight. Any other gems?

* Likelihood of getting QF staff travel interline ticket with AA? Particularly LAX - DFW or DFW to MEX?

* Should I just pay full fare from LAX - MEX and then can choose from a variety of airlines? Then there's the question of me getting the SYD - LAX flight in order to make my connection.

BTW I can access the availability lists, but thought maybe Sept loading would differ a lot to May, esp with Easter being in April (darn).

Thanks in advance for any advice :)
