Wehad booked this trip a few months ago and as the day drew nearer it suddenlydawned on both of us that we would end work on Friday and have to get up at5.00 AM the next morning to get to the airport.
Mostnights, even before a trip I have no problems sleeping through to a few minutesbefore the alarm, but not this time. In bed by 10.00, asleep by 10.05, andawake at 3.00am. After rolling around for half an hour I finally realised Iwasn’t going back to sleep so may as well give up trying to, especially since Iwas wide awake.
Ourtaxi arrived on time and given it was the first day of school holidays wassurprised there were no holdups on Qantas drive. WE told our driver that wewere flying SQ and he dropped us off at the very end of the Terminal, which Ithought was probably completely the wrong place, only to be proved wrong oncewe went inside.
Whathave SQ done wrong to be as far away from anything else as you can get?
Whilstbeing checked in we were told that there were no seats in Economy and only twoleft in Business. As helpful travellers we kindly offered to give our seats up if need be andmove into First class, but he offer was politely declined.
Expresspasses in hand we proceeded quickly through Immigration and Customs and on tothe Silverkris Lounge. From the reports I had read I was expecting somethingakin to a Coles Cafeteria with vinyl chairs and laminex tables. Pleasantly surprised would describe my firstimpression. There were sufficient comfortable chairs to seat about 50 people,large windows overlooking the Tarmac and a reasonable selection of food. Quite a pleasent place to spend an hourbefore the flight.
This plane was fitted with SQ medium Haul Business Class Seats, arranged ina 2-2-2 configuration. Having had only afew Business Class flights I don’t have that many to compare to, but from mypoint of view the seats were great. If I had a choice I wouldn’t choose them tosleep on as they don’t lie completely flat, but for lounging on a day flight,wonderful.
Breakfastwas served shortly after takeoff, consisting of Juice” Fruit, a choice ofBircher Meusli, Corn Flakes or Yoghurt. The Bircher Meusli didn’t seem to be ahit given the number that were going back To the Galley. The hot course which followedconsisted of either Seafood Congee, Griddled Pancakes or Frittata. We tried he Congee and Frattata and they were as good as the food we have eaten on QF.
Thetime between breakfast and lunch passed quickly taken up by fiddling with theseat controls to get the maximum comfort while watching a movie and snacking onpeanuts.
Luncharrived, Foie Gras and Smoked Duck Breast for entree followed by Grilled Ribeyewhich we were told was exclusively created by Mathew Moran of Aria RestaurantSydney. The steak was very tender but just a kittle dry. The accompanying vegetablesserved were cooked well and it all wentdown nicely with a 2008 Chateau La Garde Bordeaux. Dessert consisted ofChocolate Truffle Cake with Berry Compote.
Bythe time we finished lunch and had a little more play with the IFE, the Captaionwas announcing the commencement of our descent into SIN. After landing at T3 we quickly found our wayto T2 for our flight to BKK leaving about an hour and a half later. Once at T2 itdidn’t take us long to find the Silverkris lounge and some sparkling water tokeep us hydrated. This is a very large lounge with ample seating areas and awide range of food and drink options.
Themost important thing we have noticed between Travelling in Y and J apart fromthe lounge access, better seats, food and drink is that the flight time seemsless. On this flight of 8.5 hours I only just got to watch one movie. Therealways seems to be some distraction to help pass the time. As another FF said “if you travel in J the trip begins when you board, not when you get off”.
