Hi

My elderly mother booked a flight from SYD to Coolongatta return on Jetstar with the flight departing and arriving back into SYD international airport .

Will she need to get to SYD international terminal 2 hours before her flight departure to OOL so she can get through sydney immigration/customs queue etc ?

Also on her return flight back into SYD International terminal, is there a seperate customs line for people who's flight was boarded interstate and not overseas ?
Hoping that she doesn't have to join the normally long customs queue on arrival back into Sydney international terminal ?

Any info would be greatly appreciated as she is now stressing on what will happen in relation to customs etc in SYD, and also she doesn't want to get to SYD airport to check in 2 hours before her domestic flight.

Hi she will need to be their early for the International separtures 2 hours is good. As for the immigration etc she will have a D stamp on her boarding pass that she will need to show and will be able to enter via the Domestic line and depart also from the Domestic Exit at the International arrival point. Bear in mind she will need an acceptable form of Photo ID such as a passport or drivers license.

have done many an F Lounge run with Jetstar flying Domestic from International and never had any issues she should be fine if concerned get her to tell the flight attendants who im sure will help as much as possible.

Hope she has a great time. Cheers

Thanks Ansett

So even though the flight is a 'domestic' leaving from Syd and arriving into Coolangatta airport, does she still have to go through immigration on her flight out of Sydney
And is that why she needs to allow 2 hours before her flight ?

Does she also need to allow 2 hours at the airport on her return leg departing from Coolangatta, as from memory Coolangatta does not have an international airport and therefore she would not have to go through all the security checks at Coolangatta for the return journey ??

Hi Kaz

Thats right yes she has to go through Imigration hence the extra time needed as for Coolangatta you will need to check her confirmation as to what terminal she leaves from as Coolangatta does have International flights. Given that she arrives back at Sydney International then I would suggest she will have to do same thing in Coolangatta. Give Jetstar a call if she is concerned.

Also just a side note she cant buy duty free :D

And as an inexperience traveller through an international terminal make sure your mother is aware of the LAG rules. It would not be a happy day if she was forced to surrender items because they were >100ml.

A lot of international flights close for checkin one hour prior to departure due to paperwork that has to be completed once checkin has closed, then signed by the Captain of the aircraft & given to customs to be stamped & handed back to the flight crew.

Some people take this as it's okay to arrive at checkin one hour before which would be too late. I would not leave it any later than 90 minutes before to checkin at both airports. Coolangatta is definitely an international airport so she will have to complete customs formalities plus the usual airport security.

Also remind your Mum to hang on to the boarding pass with the orange 'D' sticker checkin put on it for domestic passengers as you must hand this in to customs on arrival at both ports.

There is a separate queue in customs for domestic pax with 'D' stickers. Some airports will have a sign that says "Air crew, Express Card holders, Domestic passengers" or words to that effect.

I take it both flights have flight numbers under 400? (Just checking, first time I read your post I thought you where talking about T2, and calling the airport "Sydney International Airport")

As others have said, in terms of timings you need to treat it as an international flight. Technically you are "leaving" the country, they will stamp the boarding pass with a departed AU stamp, and stamp it again on arrival in OOL and vv. (PS if they don't make sure they do, I had a rather annoying wait at SYD once after the custom officer in BNE forgot to place the stamp on the BP).

This means that all rules, in regards to timings, LAG's and security will be in affect.
