Sydney airport Baggage system outage

But as for J getting a pass to ignore the allowances, gonna have to disagree with you there. Why should J get to bring more onboard when it’s quite likely some Y pax won’t even be able to bring even their allowance on?
Because they are in business is my thinking, especially when it’s international.

But that opinion flows on from the other bit that we agree on, that weight shouldn’t be an issue if the bag falls within dimensions. If that’s the case, business should get more amenity than economy.

Of course FAs here have pointed out the reasons for weight limits in the case where they have to assist in putting bags up in the locker. And if there is turbulence then the actual overhead bins may break with too much weight. I fully accept that but I’m afraid I’m still going to take my 12 kg carry-on on board and either sitting within my personal space in my business seat for international.

I've never seen QF police international.

For domestic - if QF wants to give a higher allowance to J pax, they can do so by publishing a different allowance. They do not. That's their choice, fly someone else if you don't like it or accept the risk you might get policed (which is rather high at the moment). There isn't enough space on a full 737 for everybody to take their current allowance, let alone J pax helping themselves to extra.

Except QF do not charge - its more safety & compliance than revenue raising.

It's really just ensuring OTP. Gate checking bags takes time.

I think you are conflating weight versus volume there. It's the dimensions which are being policed at the moment. A standard size carryon which is a couple of kilograms over won’t take up any more space. We both agreed weight wasn't really be the problem ( within reasonable limits) compared to volume, viz:

I don’t really understand the weight limits on carry-ons if they are within the required dimensions, UK and USA have much higher allowances

It's not that I'm conflating them, my personal belief is there shouldn't be low weight allowances; however airlines need to limit bags and often they do this by weighing bags and forcing overweight bags to be checked. It's a different metric (weight) but a fair way to achieve an outcome for a different metric (volume).

If you don't want your bag checked, you have to pack within the allowance or accept the risk. I don't agree that J pax should get a free pass.

And yes even though on my recent flight they were mainly checking pieces, they did have scales there and other posters have said they have been policing weight.

There would be a good reason for that. I highly doubt that the scales they have at that point have all the necessary approvals and checks done (especially since they are moving them around) to comply with Australian Trade Measurement laws - and since they are "selling" a cabin bag up t that weight, measuring the weight would come under those laws. Mind you, the measuring of size falls under the same laws.

Simply counting numbers does not - hence number of pieces is safe to enforce.

Yeah, nah. A fair way to police carry on volumes so space is fairly distributed fairly is to measure the volumes, not the weight.

Which is what Qantas appears to be doing at the moment. My carry-on is actually smaller than what you might call a standard carry-on so I have no current worries at all. But if I was over 10kg and they did measure the weight, I could easily take something out and either put it in my personal item or carried on my person as I said above. All good.

I pays me money and I take me chances. I'll see what happens this weekend.

What’s the issue then? 10Kg, considering it doesn’t include your personal item, is pretty easy to work with.

As I already said there isn’t space for all pax to bring on their allowance if the flight is full. So the options are reduce the allowance,ie no roller bags, or use the weight limit to cull bags from the over packers, which are likely to be the bigger bags. Fairer to check those who have exceeded their allowance rather than those who happened to be in a late boarding group.

It is what it is and I don’t see a better system. Certainly better than US airlines where large sections of Y can’t bring a bag onboard, especially as QF doesn’t charged for a checked bag.

I think the issue with the bag system is resolved as app messages have disappeared. I’m currently in T3 and things are rather quiet and normal.

Which would only mean anything, if the crew onboard went through the overhead lockers checking for tags, which I'm sure they don't given they have better things to be doing. But does raise some interesting scenarios:
  • Passengers just removing said tags themselves
  • Passengers moving other passengers (tagged) bags out of the lockers if there's no room
I've seen crew place tagged bags in overhead lockers!

Was running late for my golden triangle today and was not weighed. She clocked the P1 tag and let through. Patrols at regular and premium with both having the approved hand luggage tags in hand. I’m always under but just slows down.

Can’t imagine they would introduce anything on class of travel as that would be a lot of faffing around at security showing BPs etc.

It is a bit of a shame that Syd is becoming like PER. Thankfully MEL and BNE seem spared so far.
