Sydney Airport Curfew Change Call - EK faces $1M fine

TOURISM operators are calling for curfew regulations at Sydney Airport to be changed after Emirates Airlines faces up to $1 million in fines for weather delayed departures.

The Tourism Industry Council NSW said it was "absurd'' that carriers are not given dispensation to depart after the curfew in the event of weather related delays, particularly when thunderstorms drastically reduce or stop aircraft movements altogether.

The council's general manager Andrew Jefferies said the hard curfew hours of 11pm and 6am restrict the operations of Sydney Airport and limit the competitiveness of Australia's global gateway, especially when compared to Melbourne, Brisbane and its neighbours in the Asia-Pacific.

The curfew is in place, I'd be against a special waiver but perhaps a graduated scale of dollars for minutes to discourage it.

Not living in Syd but i think there needs to be special allowances to allow for late departures or early arrives due to weather conditions in SYD.

I think many of us on this forum have been advised due to Curfew in SYD your flight has now been delayed or we will have to put you on a earlier flight so you don't miss your connection.

Maybe they can move the curfew due to bad weather to last flight by midnight and flights can start at 5am.

This could also help the airlines with positioning of aircraft for the next day.

By doing this it will help the airlines to save money because they won't have to pay for accommodation for a plane load of people.

I think a sliding scale would be good, if you are late, one charge, but after midnight then it could be the $1,000,000 charge.

Would be interesting if a recent noise study was available, compared to the aircraft and airport layout of 20 years ago there must have been some change to noise levels. Too many marginal electorates for the curfew to ever be lifted.

In regards to the curfew maybe they need a buffer.

I have been reading through old posts and some of the incidents have been about minutes.

Maybe the curfew has to be worked slightly different.

If the flight is due to depart within curfew times it can happen.

Here is another idea as well.

Lets just say flight time from BNE to SYD is 1 hour.

The latest that flight can leave is 9.55pm.

If the flight leaves on time then there should be no reason why it can not complete the trip.

If during the flight the plan either has a strong headwind or traffic control has to divert the flight and it comes in after 11pm well it is within the regulations.

If that happened now an entire plane load of people are all disrupted all due to a silly curfew because of a few old dears with nothing better to do than whinge about noise.

I bought near the airport well aware and accepting of the fact that there was going to be airplane noise. The airlines schedule flights there well aware and accepting of the fact that there is a curfew. So who is whinging exactly????

There will always be complaints, last year during the brisbane floods there were numerous complaints about low flying helicopters!

I can understand the reason for the curfew, however I am completely against the inflexibility of it.

I'm personally of the opinion that flights should not be scheduled to depart or arrive between 11pm and 6am, however scheduled flights should be allowed to operate if the delay is due to reasons such as late arriving operating aircraft or weather causes a delay in departure.

Of course if an airline "schedules" a plane before the 11pm cut off, which always departs late (say 5% of departures for that scheduled flight happen later than 11pm), the airline would need to be forced to look at moving the flight schedule earlier so that it will depart before 11pm or not operate the flight, again as a scheduling thing, not as a "lets leave 300 pax sitting around at an airport in the middle of the night" thing.

Agreed. Run it 24/7 if necessary.

Rest assured that if the powers that be decided to move Sydney airport to a completely different location (Highly unlikely, I know) that the same people who complained about the noise would also complain that THEIR airport was been taken away and that it would result in a knock to the local economy and jobs Blaa blaa.

Run the airport 24/7 the local's jump up and down.

Huge task and move the airport to somewhere with no issues for noise and the locals will jump up and down that they are hurting the local economy.

Relocating might be a major boost for the SYD economy though - new airport for a start and new transport infrastructure to support it. Also a whole new set of people to protest about noise, pollution, small animal deaths etc.

I find the whole argument about having bought there so deal with it interesting. I agree that people recently bought in a certain condition - with the curfew in place. However times change - the people of Epping are having massive disruption due to the M2 road "works" (I use quotes as that would imply people are actually working). The noise from increased traffic over the next years will have an impact on that area - so why are airport related residents so protected?

Times change, cough happens - buy ear plugs.

As someone who lived under the flight paths of SYD for many years I feel the curfew is silly.We lived at Stanmore and could make out the heads in the windows as the planes flew past our window.Used to joke that we could recognise the pilots.You get used to the noise.When we moved to Maitland we couldn't sleep because it was too quiet!
