Sydney Airport makes a Top 10 list!...

SYD has made a Top 10 airports list... it's just not likely one they want to be on!

Courtesy of LoyaltyLobby, an article at the weekend has shown that Australia's busiest airport was 9th in the world for the greatest percentage of flights delayed during the northern Summer, so far. Hopefully it's a not a list they try to rise further on!

According to FlightAware these are the worst offenders of this summer’s travel disaster based on search data from May 26 to July 19.

Airports with the greatest percentage of flights delayed:

1. Canada: Toronto Pearson International Airport – 52.5%
2. Germany: Frankfurt Airport – 45.4%
3. France: Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport – 43.2%
4. Netherlands: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – 41.5%
5. United Kingdom: Gatwick Airport – 41.1%
6. United Kingdom: Heathrow Airport – 40.5%
7. Germany: Munich International Airport – 40.4%
8. Greece: Athens International Airport – 37.9%
9. Australia: Sydney Airport – 34.2%
10. United States: Orlando International Airport – 33.4%

Been to 5 of the 10 in the last month, some of them multiple times. Frankfurt was the worst for me by far. If you think 3 hours in queues is bad at SYD etc. I was in a queue at Frankfurt from 10am to 20:30pm... Goes without saying I missed my flight and wasn't able to rebook for 2 days (all flights overbooked and airport severely understaffed). Crazy times.

PreCovid Fra was my most hated airport esp for transits so it doesn't surprise me!

ugh - sounds absolutely awful. We were considering a Europe visit in August, and - I think, thankfully - premium cabin pricing shut down that idea. We would have been travelling with a 6 year old, who gets pretty vocal about waiting even a few minutes in a queue for something

As bad as the media makes it out to be, a lot of the flights are operating normally or with minor delays, I wouldn't necessarily cancel a trip over the concerns of all of this travel chaos, just be prepared.

On the bright side of being stranded and dealing with long queues, Lufthansa put us up in a hotel for 2 nights in the beautiful town of Kronberg with all meals and taxis covered:






Not the worst place in the world to be stuck...

Kronberg is a nice spot. Some of my wife's relatives come from there. There is even a little display of a pigeon camera for aerial photos invented by one of them in the local museum. I think we had a drink at the same spot you did.
