Sydney Domestic Parking Woes

Had my domestic booking booking this weekend summarily cancelled and then referred to this:

Called up and was told the domestic car park (P1) has been condemned due to major structural issues.
The airport are trying to see if some temporary props will be permitted to allow it to stay open but until then they can‘t use it.
Otherwise they are just directing everyone to the international terminal parking which is quite the detour.

Good to see the private operators taking good care of key infrastructure for the travelling public.

More shopping centre space!

Ok that might explain whats happened to me. Thursday I received their Black Friday promotion. I need to part at SYD next week so took it up. Yesterday received an email from them that my T3 parking has been "Upgraded" to a QF Valet parking (which will be interesting given I will arrive in our rust bucket station car).. Then Today another email from them saying that the Black Friday promotions would only be valid 5th Dec to 17th Dec.

I suspect I will be notified soon that even the Valet parking will not be honoured!

Thanks, was wondering what was going on when I tried to park there. P2 will get full pretty quickly.
I'm surprised this isn't a news item anywhere either.

This explains the e-mail I got from Hertz today. All the rental car operations for all operators from the domestic terminals have been hastily shifted to alternative locations.

Important car rental pick-up and drop-off changes at Sydney Airport Domestic (T2 & T3 Terminals) from Thursday 1 December 2022

Dear dylarr,

From Thursday 1 December 2022, due to unforeseen and urgent works at Sydney Airport (Domestic T2 and T3) all Domestic car rental companies’ vehicle pick-ups and drop-offs, including Hertz, will take place on Ross Smith Avenue in the South-East Sector (see map below)

Please note, this relates to Sydney Airport Domestic (T2 and T3 Terminals) only and does not affect Hertz Car Rental operations at the International Terminal.

Vehicle Pick Up
  • Car rentals desks will be located at T2 or T3 Terminals.
  • A free car rental shuttle service will transport customers from dedicated kerbside stops outside the T2 and T3 Terminals to the Hertz car rental pick up point on Ross Smith Avenue in the South-East Sector.

Vehicle Drop Off
  • All car rental drop-offs will take place in the South-East Sector on Ross Smith Avenue (see below map) and not at the P1 carpark.
  • If you are returning a Hertz rental car from Sydney south or via the M5 motorway, please turn left into Butler Road from General Holmes Drive (BP Service Station) and then turn left at the round-about onto Ross Smith Avenue. You will then see signs to Hertz Car Rental new temporary location.
  • If you are returning a Hertz rental car from Sydney CBD, north or eastern suburbs, please turn right into General Holmes Drive from Southern Cross Drive. Turn left into Ross Smith Avenue and follow Ross Smith Avenue. Proceed straight at roundabout and you will see signs to the Hertz car rental temporary location.
Syd Airport Car Rental Return
Complimentary Shuttle Bus Transfers
  • Returning Your Car - A complimentary shuttle bus will be provided to transport customers between the temporary Hertz car rental area and T2 and T3 Domestic Terminals.
  • Collecting Your Car - Please follow the car rental signage at the T2 and T3 Domestic Terminals and the pick-up points to the dedicated free shuttle bus pick-up areas.

Key Points
  • A free car rental shuttle service will transport customers from dedicated kerbside stops outside the T2 and T3 Terminals to the Hertz car rental pick up point on Ross Smith Avenue in the South-East Sector.
  • Only customers with an existing Hertz car rental booking will be able to access the complimentary car rental shuttle service from T2 and T3 Terminals to the pick-up point.
  • Customers without a booking must arrange a car rental at the in-terminal rental car desks at T2 and T3 prior to accessing the free shuttle service.
Please allow additional time to make your flight

To allow enough time to shuttle to or from the Hertz car rental pick up point and the T2 and T3 Domestic Terminals, Sydney Domestic Airport is advising all customers to allow for an additional 30-minute or more transit time.

Hertz prides itself on exceptional customer service. Whilst the works being carried out by Sydney Domestic Airport are essential and beyond our control, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. The works impact all car rental companies within the airport precinct, not just Hertz, and we are in dialogue with Sydney Airport to resume normal operations as quickly as safely possible.

We advise all customers to monitor the Sydney Airport website for further updates.

Looks like Sydney Airport has forced all the car rental operators into a US style off-airport situation at short notice. Hopefully the busses are not here to stay or otherwise the airport should sort out proper facilities for them.

Working for one of those operators, our suspicions are that car rental will not return back to the original setup in Sydney - it's been on the SYD APs plans for years (pre-COVID) to move car rental and use buses etc. This issue with the structure has simply fast tracked this idea and will be in it's temporary situation for a while.

I didn't get any email so was shocked when I couldn't pick up my rental car at SYD dom. This added another 45 minutes to travel time.. There was no one at the Hertz desk in T2 and a notice said to go to the Virgin counter in T3 or if Gold take the shuttle. I'm Gold (President's circle) but having trouble with Hertz recognising it. I phoned Hertz and was told to take the shuttle. All worked out, but took time. An airport person at the shuttle point was not helpful.

Next time I might pick up from International. Had a chat with the attendant at International where I was returning the car, and he has recommended that. If you are flying with Qantas you can take the free bus. The transfer point is just across the roadway. I don't know what other airlines do. If too many people try this it might be stopped. Nevertheless the Hertz-Qantas combination could work at International.

It's a good idea, just make sure to either put an international flight number into your reservation or make some comments to flag the team to know to have a vehicle at INT - just as car rental operators haven't seen big rental numbers out of that terminal post COVID, so have kept minimal staff/vehicles there.

Hertz staff are returning to INT with one on duty at the kiosk when none were there earlier in the year. You don't need an international flight number and I had sometimes been told at the Domestic terminal that my car was at INT, even though the booking was made with a DOM flight number. (Might have been an INT flight number arriving at BNE or MEL). But good idea nevertheless. You can return at any terminal, whatever the flight number.

Has anyone had any experience of arriving at SYD DOM and collecting the car at International?

Wow I hadn’t seen this back in December. What a debacle.

Any updates / timelines to a proper solution? A 30min additional time allowance on rental return to terminal is not insignificant. Same on pickup presumably.

From what I hear it could be several years. They have to rebuild the car park.

Report today that both Sydney P1 and P2 (the two main carparks) need to be demolished.

Both or P1 only?

Both or P1 only?
This may belong to the humour thread - QF to abolish P1 (Chinese whispers instead of SYD to demolish P1)
