Now that Sydney toll ways are e-tag only (no cash) can anyone tell me how the rental companies are handling this? Is there a "daily" charge available as per Melbourne? Are you able to purchase a 24 hour pass on-line or at a terminal in a BP Servo (ala Melbourne)?
Am travelling to Sydney next month and renting at the airport and curious as to how it all works now.
Many thanks
JB

Bayswater Car Rentals in Sydney have e-tags installed and any tolls are added to your bill as they have your credit card details. I don't think Avis does but you should check with the car rental company beforehand.

Passes for other motorways (such as the M7 which is also cashless) can be purchased over the phone once you have the car rego number, so assume that the same will apply with the Harbour Bridge.

If you have an e-tag account with authority to add and remove vehicles, you can also take your own etag to Sydney and then ring the provider and have the rental car added to that account for x number of days.

I haven't seen any booths at SYD to purchase day passes.

Sorry to drag up an old thread... Thinking about picking up a car from SYD (prob Budget but open to suggestions... after cheap as possible! for a weekish)... I'm staying out on the northern beaches so ED+SH Tunnel would be the way I wanted to go... Do budget's cars come with e-tags or some other toll paying solution?

Do you have a Citylink tag for Melbourne? If so, then you can just use that

I know that Hertz doesn't supply tags, don't know about budget

No, I'm just a casual eastlink user so I have a non-tag acct

of course the other option is to PT it to the other side of the harbor and hire from there...

call into cityink and grab an etag - costs bugger all to get up and running and will save you a world of anoyance trying to pay tolls in sydney with all their different motorways and toll ways

Mr!

AVIS don't have tags in their cars. I've got a tag myself but didn't want to have to cart it around last time I went to the US (yes, I know it's only little but...:)). Made the mistake of trying to get an e-pass on-line only after about 1/2 hour of trying and countless error messages was I able to get one. Very frustrating. Same problem on the way back, gave up and went to the RTA to pay it there. Guess what, they do it on-line using the same hopeless system and couldn't get it to work either. AVIS advised me that if you don't get an e-pass they will charge the toll (+ an AVIS administration charge) to your credit card account. I can't remember what the admin charge was but it sounded a bit steep to just whack another transaction through on your cc.

Another option is to avoid the ED altogether, take the short route to the city, get onto the ANZAC Bridge/Daarling Habour expressway road thingy that connects to the Habour Bridge, which is free heading north bound (or was 6 years ago). Then you only have to worry about the return and it isn't that far to pop over the North Ryde area and cross over the River there, go down King Georges road and M5 it into the airport (I can't exactly remember but I believe there are no tolls between King Georges road and the airport, well 6 years ago).

Or come in via Drummoyne and ANZAC Bridge, but I never liked driving that way.

A visitors pass might be the way to go
Roam e-TAG and Roam e-PASS for electronic tolling

You can open your Visitor's e-PASS on this website before, or up to 48 hours after your first trip on a Sydney toll road.

  • you will be charged the toll plus $0.75 Vehicle Matching Fee for each trip on a Sydney toll road.
  • there is a Start-Up Fee of $1.50 for each Visitor's e-PASS opened on this website

Looks perfect!

So I can just go... rent a car.. and if it does not have a tag do that... nice one...

I wait till the bill comes in the mail then pay the toll minus the admin fee they tack on. Until they get their act sorted out this is the most convenient method for me when visiting Sydney. If I was going their often I guess I would buy one of their tag things.

Well, that wouldn't work v well at all with a hire car given the $33 fee that some add for processing the violation

I would still suggest getting at tag if likely to have opportunities in future to use it; does make life nice n easy on Melbourne Citylink, Brisbane Bridge and the Sydney tollways

no actual cost for the tag, just a $40 deposit that will get refunded at the time you decide you have had enough of it

no deposit for Qld tags at the moment ;). Not sure if you need to have a Qld registered vehicle or a Qld address to register. I just ordered two for my two vehicles and only paid the pre-paid usage value (I chose $50 but can sign-up with less). Tags delivered in about a week. Can be used interstate as well, and there is no mention of any surcharge for interstate toll road usage so I assume they are charged the same amount as locals.

I have a melbourne tag that i got years ago (Actually its updates to the new mini model) and i use it all the time interstate. Great that everybody is playing together now :)

By Brisbane Bridge, I assume you mean the Gateway Bridge in Brisbane.

Do these tags also work on the Logan motorway?

Except us Perth people who insist on having free roads. ;)
Don't get used to free roads, you have a Liberal government now

B

Do these tags also work on the Logan motorway?

According to the company my tag is with ( Roam Express )

Your Roam Express e-TAG® is accepted on all electronic Toll Roads in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane

so it would seem likely

This is the best deal. Only problem for NSW users is being unable to participate in the govt cashback scheme using this tag.
