Sydney - Perth - which A330?

I tweeted Virgin's account, and the response was a link to the terms and conditions of the complimentary upgrades (on the Platinum Status Benefits page), which in point 4 or 5 state that the upgrades are subject to the availability of Business Reward seats. So it is stated there. Makes the whole point of this rather benefit rather mute going forward, because booking flexi does not guarantee an upgrade at all (complimentary or using points) - you actually have to spend the additional extra time trying to call their membership centre and inquire about the possible flights, or trying to make a dummy reward point booking. Time consuming, and in my view hard to make use of - albeit emotional as I just got off this flight :) and I had a really coughpy seat with the ancient entertainment unit housing under the seat in front of me and I couldn't stretch my legs.

As I previously said PM VFF here, I have done this with the same issue and had a successful outcome.

It also seems they haven't finished upgrading their 737s to the new J layout. Flying PER-KTA this afternoon, and apparently it still is the old interior with the middle seats blocked in the first few rows. I'm sure one of their reps told me some months ago that all the old-layout 737's have been re-done.

Are you sure?

I have just checked and it is a 73H - with 30 rows.

1D would be a business seat sold as economy and is the only one of the eight still available in rows 1 and 2.
Flight was departing 0700. First called their number when I booked it (last friday). Got told there are no available seats.
On the way to the airport this morning (0500), checked their website, and it was still showing 4 seats available in J.
Checked in at 05:30, went into the lounge, and they confirmed seats available, but none that are "upgradeable".
I suspect catering issues - however 4 seats being still available represents a pretty full cabin.

.

Where do you check which plane operates the route, and which seats are still available?
I was in 1F and there was a guy sitting next to me in 1D, so I'm assuming a last minute change?
There was no one in 2D though.

I checked about 14:10 ... ~40 minutes after your post.

I used Expert Flyer FWIW.

Another way is to do a 'dummy booking' on the flight and see the layout as well as what seats it will permit you to select.

All VH- registered 30 row 737's operated by VA have the business class seats in rows 1 and 2. The NZ registered ones still have the 'pe' convertible seating but I t was very unlikely to be one of them.
