Hi guys, I'm traveling to Cairns from Sydney end of next week and am not quite sure what to expect in terms of meal service in J as the flights hover just around the 3 hour mark and Cairns is not classified as City flyer either. Anyone been on such a flight recently? Going out on the 7:35pm and back on the 5:20pm.

Major point in question is whether I can expect two or only one hot choice for dinner. The latter case has been a major gripe for me recently as I'm allergic to fish and more often than not, the one hot choice turns out to be salmon (or, worse, last time, smoked trout  They ran out of the salad option for the last row of J with THAT hot choice).

It really has been keeping me from booking J domestic as quite often I end up wishing I had that pasta with tomato sauce from Y instead

Just the one hot and one cold choice

Why not put a special meal request in to give you three choices ;)

If you do that will they still offer you the regular meal options?

Yes in most if not all cases, I have often sat next to someone who has a special meal and they are advised what it is then given the choice of a meal from the normal offering.

I doubt that. Plus, more often than not, I end up with some lonely salad leaves on the plate which is also not what I want. Only very few airlines offer you a "Non fish meal" that actually contains a proper meat choice, even in J. SQ does it even in Y, EK as well. Qantas doesn't, JAL doesn't, BA doesn't :(
Actually, on my recent trip to Europe on JAL, I called them up after the first flight and asked them to take the non-fish request out of my booking again as I got stuck with rather lame vegetarian/raw vegetable choices.

Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks for the advice, will do then as I BET the hot choice on a Friday night will have a blue wrapper on it!

I am just not sure what I would recommend:

  • Child (2-11 years)
  • Diabetic
  • Fruit Platter
  • Gluten Intolerance
  • Hindu
  • Infant (0-11 months)
  • Kosher Meal
  • Moslem (Halal)
  • Vegetarian (Asian Indian Style)
  • Vegetarian (Lacto Ovo)
  • Vegetarian (Oriental)
  • Vegetarian (Strict Indian)
  • Vegan

Had a colleague who tried all the meals. I think they said either the kosher or the diabetic was the option, but I can't remember which one they thought was best.

Yep- that's always my issue. I definitely don't want vegetarian, Kosher or Halal might be okay actually though it will be kinda funny if I wash my muslim meal away with healthy serves of alcohol . Diabetic could be fine as well but then again might also contain fish.

Maybe someone here has tried a few of those on QF or has them because it's actually needed for health or religious reasons? Would be very grateful for any hints as I always encounter this issue. And nothing could be more sad than my face when I have either scored an upgrade seat to J or, better even, have talked my work into sponsoring a J ticket and then out comes the fish

As Markis10 posted it can often happens that way as generally more meals are loaded than J PAX.

However, not always and it can depend on several factors such as where you are seated, who is serving you and, perhaps, the phase of the Moon.

Maybe you need to go vegetarina?

Mhm. All not too appealing really. Maybe I should downgrade myself to Y so that I end up with a nice meal?
