Nope, you'd need to collect them regardless of carrier as you need to bring your own luggage through customs in Australia.Re. this route – if we're flying RAR–SYD–MEL next month, will we be able to check in our bags at RAR all the way to MEL if all legs are with JQ?

Oops, yes - I mean SYD-MEL!SYD-MEL or MEL-SYD?

Futhermore, thinking of changing the MEL–SYD to a QF flight. Will that mean we'd then have to go pick up our bags then head over to the domestic terminal to re-check-in our bags? We've got 2.5 hours layover, which isn't bad actually.
So, are you suggesting that it would be easier doing this all on one airline (JQ) rather than a mix of JQ onto the later QF flight?JQ142 RAR SYD? Then JQ?? SYD-MEL from T2?
As SYD is your port of entry to Australia expect need to clear immigration & customs at SYD. Then proceed, with bags, to next flight for bag drop and checkin.
With both JQ flights in 1 PNR a level of protection if the first flight is late. If the 2nd flight is a separate ticket/PNR all the risk is yours.
A few months ago I did an AU domestic then international on JQ in 1 ticket/PNR. Had to pick up bags and then check in for the second flight at the transit.
