In an escalation of a pay dispute between Sydney train drivers and the NSW government, it has been announced that unless something changes, Sydney trains will stop running from Thursday night until Sunday.

I'm due to fly into Sydney for the weekend but I'm seriously considering cancelling if the trains are not running. I'm plannning to stay in Turramurra and if there are no trains, getting a taxi or rideshare from/to the airport will be frightfully expensive (probably more than what I paid for the flight!), not to mention how long the wait might be to catch one at all.

What do you think my chances are of Virgin waiving the $99 cancellation fee for my Choice fare if I ask (nicely) to cancel or change as a result of the train strike?

Chances of waiving the fee is low given that it is nothing to do with them, but they may be nice to you if you have status.

Would you consider hiring a car during that time?

Also the strike is not fully confirmed as they are still negotiating today.

I actually fly SYD-ADL and back this weekend. Luckily I decided to drive to the airport instead and already reserved a car spot on one of the private car parks nearby.

To be replaced by strikes in 2 weeks' time...no way the government will agree to a 32% pay rise over 4 years!
Yeh but they can at least have the metro running and possibly rustle up more buses in preparation.

It wouldve been asbolutely brutal this weekend with no metro, multiple A league games and Pearl Jam on.

Im just happy it is off as otherwise a catch up with friends (half which coming from north) on Sunday would have had to be rescheduled given no train nor metro. Luckily for me I mostly rely on busses.
