I thought I understood T-80 already until today.

I helped my sister and her son to fly to MEL and the departure time is well within the T-80 period.

They are both lower than NB i.e. they are non-members.

While I could see (as a WP) plenty of un-allocated seats throughout the plane, the best I could see from their MMB is row 50.

Is that right that for non-members, the T-80 "opening up" does not apply ?

Appreciate an education here.

Thanks

Domestic or international?

From personal experience, I've seen seats open up at exactly T-80 only to be blocked again a few minutes later after I'd manage to select mine... So it seems one has to get in on the dot?

Yep this is also my experience, though it seems to have changed since I became a status pax (silver) and I can select pretty much any free seat after T-80

I will be dropping back to bronze in October though :( :(

Sorry, it is DOM.

Being lower than NB, there is no point in calling QF or is there ?

Search for "notional seating"... There is a pecking order for the "better seats" and I would suggest they are well down the list.

I observed similar when helping my NB daughter and family to fly to Cairns.

True and correct

But they fly once every 2-3 yrs so would never go past NB.

Dare I say a typical non-AFFer

I was just curious about the workings of the T-80 system, that's all really.

I am thinking about the value of points earn, including everyday via Woolies etc

Just ask for the front row of economy at the airport.

Staff don't care about premium frequent flyers - they'll allocate the best seat if you ask for it.

I like your positive optimism, a good attitude to have.

What's there to lose ?

One row back to 51 ?

T - 80 may be a bit variable. I tried to do my seat reallocation this morning at T -79.6 and the first 2 rows still hadn't opened up. Tried an hour or so later and got 4C. 4D/E are not available for me to select, but 4A, B and F are. Expert Flyer shows all of Row 4 blocked except for my seat.

Something has changed, as previously Row 4 and 5 would be wide open at T-80 for me as a WP. Maybe Qantas are now holding seats for those pesky WP1s who have yet to select a seat....

that's what notional seating is all about ... maybe they have recently altered the weightings?

Sometimes I find one side is allocated and the other side available.

On a 767 23JK already allocated and 23AB available. Or a 737 4ABC allocated and 4DEF available.
