May or may not be off topic, but here goes...

I was in Taipei last week, flying CX (using my QFF Number ). On return to Aus, I find that people are trying to break into my email account and my Qantas account.

Coincidence?

Praise be to 2FA….

Apart from checkin desk, departure gate who else would have access to your FF number / name?

Everyone else at TPE and CX. Corruption just seems to be endemic, even though the people you meet are lovely.

Or, perhaps, it was just a coincidence? Of course, it could have been staff at HKG, DPS or SYD, but...

This sounds like the sort of thing can ensue from using a dodgy wifi connection, which is notorious for happening at airports,

No issues with my acct flying CX into TPE.

Suspect coincidence in your case. Agree re: wifi - i try not to login to information containing apps / accounts whilst on dodgy wifi.

Dumb question.. does using a VPN on dodgy WiFi offer any/much protection?
Yes*. It's not impenetrable, but you would at least have a layer of encryption and protection against people snooping on the network traffic. Its relatively cheap ( Free even if you want to do stuff yourself) and easy to set up.

The longer answer is that - its not infallible. There may be times when you're connecting to your VPN, you're also trusting your VPN to handle the data. Also in theory if quantum computing becomes readily available, the data captured can be decrypted in the future.
