Taken the Plunge - CX Over QF

I've finally taken the plunge and started to accrue miles with CX, rather than adding to my QF account. With the erosion of QP access, being based in Asia has shown its downside and with the deals for J travel that pop up with CX, it seemed like a good idea (been a green MP member for ages!) With the great deal I just got in J for BKK-SIN rtn this week, I figured it was a good way to kick off my earn. 11,500B for a J flight vs. 15,450B for a J* -Y flight it was a no brainer who to choose.

I guess I'll see how it all goes over the next 12 mths - it might be an utter waste of time on my part and I'll end up back with the Red Roo.

Any hints for earning more FF points with CX? I'm looking to unload a couple of my CCs from QF to Asia Miles - having all my "eggs in one basket", is becoming a drag!!

If you are HK based you should be using the CXX elite Amex for all CX purchases (2 pts per dollar I think)...edit I see you are BKK based they may have a TH issued card tough as they do in several Asian countries.

I would be asking for a status match to MPC silver asap so you can go for Gold ([email protected]) if flying in J at 1.25 status miles per mile

If you can get up to gold/diamond you will see a big difference in treatment over qf. For example CX gold get upgrades before one world emerald...and there are a heap of threads by qf plats singing the CX free upgrade praises which means you would get more as cx gold.

Also Cathay recongnises important milestones such as 25/50/75/100 flights with them... Op ups are the norm

Depending on which countries you can get a residential address and apply for credit cards in - some people sing the praises of American Express Membership Rewards to warehouse points - before transferring to other airline frequent flyer schemes (pretty much all of them including CX Asia Miles) - provided you can push enough spend through American Express and if its easy to access Amex wherever you travel and live.

I'll check the Amex deals around - need to replace what I have as it's peeling apart so hopefully can do 2 with one stone.

contact the club email from my previous post, let them know you are based in Asia and what your project travel plans are in addition to your previous spend that's gone to QF (your QFF activity statement may help along with a scan of the card).

A quick update - CX status matched me today, upon confirmation of a few upcoming CX bookings. Currently looking to switch an ANZ CC from QF earner to a Rewards card to garner some more FF points.

They seem to have quite a few offers currently, in particular a flight to Tokyo is currently cheaper than flying to HKG or SIN in July; looks like I'll be heading back to Japan earlier than I expected.

Yes, I saw this last week when it was posted, so I'm definitely keeping my eye on any changes that are announced. Will be interesting to see what they decide; could it possibly be any worse than the QF enhancements? (Already been stung by those with flights to HKG on EK - lounge access being revoked for QP members being a major one.)

Regardless though, CX offer some great deals which helps me (and my clients throughout Asia) - I have the option to pay the extra to garner SCs, which in some cases isn't much more. Or fly J - last flight to SIN cost me an extra $30 over what J* were charging for Y!!!

I'm sure you are all over this, but Asia Miles have 2 airline partners (in addition to the One World partners) which will be really useful to earn miles.

Royal Brunei - offers great price Business Class fares to/from Melbourne and to Dubai/London.
Air New Zealand; surely will come in handy.

I am a member of AA, but was put off by their 4 required US(?) segments to retain status. I am *very* happy to be proved wrong though.

Cheers for that - Y is ok for short-haul, not that I love it, and usually the client isn't willing to pay for J , so I'll keep this in mind!!! (Kept WP for 3 years as a Y only flyer out of AU worldwide, so I'm (unfortunately) well versed to the horrors of flying Y. )

Unfortunately the upgrade pecking order is being changed to favour revenue over check in order, if you're on an elite heavy route it's very difficult now to get an op-up without being a very high spending DM (mine have all but dried up for AU-HKG and intra asia routes like HKG-SIN).

Archphoto, how long did the club take to status match you? what info did you need to provide?

Sorry Grogan, only just seen your post! They got back to me in about 5 days or so; I needed to provide previous flying from the past 2-3 years with QF and all my current flights that had been purchased with them along with planned journeys.

From memory I didn't have a truckload booked, as I needed to wait for several confirms, but the 6 I did have, plus the planned longhaul back to AU (x2) probably helped as well.

I am about six months ahead of you. :mrgreen: The path is relatively easy. Sri Lankan works quite well heading west as long as you can book at R class or above.

Full earning with CX V and M classes coupled with AA's deletion of soft landings were the incentives.
