Continuing my general rant against the 'cafe breakfast' in international medium haul J.

QF20, MNL-SYD 7 1/2 hrs, breakfast starts 45 mins prior to scheduled arrival. "Cafe breakfast" of a warm ham and cheese croissant, juice, tea/coffee. That's it.

QF 1012, HBA-SYD 1 hour, breakfast starts about 40 mins prior to scheduled arrival. Breakfast of choice of ham, mushroom and cheese crepe OR scrambled egg wrap (ie both hot choices), plus juice, small bowl of cut fruit, small cinnamon scroll, tea/coffee.

I acknowledge there is more pax per crew member on the domestic flight and applaud the thought of giving pax most sleep time on the international one. There may not be time to give pax a choice of hot dishes on the latter, but if they are going to plonk a tray down, they may as well put a couple of things on it besides a filled croissant.

Otherwise it's just cheapness, not time efficiency.

Agree - except HKG-MEL J last week and you dont even get a tray for b'fast just the placemat ......

re: Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

Customers should be given a choice!

The excuse that "most customers" want to sleep is a cop out!

Yes I also agree.

It would be great if they could bring some of this on line with your booking, so you could order your meal beforehand, SQ Book-the-Cook style.

Yes I had the pleasure on MNL-SYD of the J cafe breakfast - as I was straight off to work after I was underwhelmed. Pretty cheap offering for an International J fare costing $3k plus in most cases.

Agree - would like to see how they reached that conclusion - it certainly wasn't by asking me or others on AFF :(

Didn't or has SQ done the same thing though on a few of their Australia-SIN-Australia flights ?

to be fair (not always my forte ;) ) for a short night flight ( say 6 hrs seatbelt light off to on) many pax do want a late breakfast start to maximise sleep. There are threads here grumbling about long haul breakfasts starting 2 or more hrs before touchdown. Even if you ask for a late or no service, the lights and noise will always wake me, a light plane sleeper.

My point is that they could please if not everyone, then many more people by just adding to the tray with the existing service timing.

LadyC - QF have introduced a pre order service for dinner out of LAX - to be introduced to other routes if it works out. Can't see it ever applying to breakfast, though.

Qantas Cafe Breakfast

Was on QF 128 HKg Syd recently in Business on the a380. About 6am prior to 7.30am Sydney arrival the lights came on. Almost immediately the trolly arrived and I was asked what I wanted. I just settled for yoghurt. The service was very abrupt, rushed and certainly not done in a pleasant manner. No drinks, coffee or tea were offered so I assumed they would be coming and asking later. In the ensuing time before landing I went about packing up my stuff, filling immigration forms and the like.

As we commenced our descent it occurred to me I hadn't had my coffee so I asked the person next to me if they had been offered anything and they had exactly my experience and were as disappointed and annoyed at the very poor service as I was.

We then discussed the service overall and both agreed it was very ordinary for a premium cabin. The crew did what they had to but that was it.

The reason this was top of mind for me was that I had just flown two sectors Bangkok Hong Kong on Emirates. On one leg in economy I was greeted in my seat by a flight attendant by name and welcomed aboard. She asked me if I needed anything and to let her know during the flight. I flew business on the return leg and several of the crew spoke to me prior to take off and during the flight. Their grooming, personality and customer service was well above anything I had experienced with Qantas, except in First Class.

I know that their have comments about Emirates poaching Qantas customers and they certainly impressed me. I was not asked at any stage to join their frequent flyer program. I also really liked the privacy and entertainment options in Business on the a380. For me a much superior product to Qantas.

Re: Qantas Cafe Breakfast

Agreed, the cafe breakfast is a big disappointment indeed. I hope QF eventually come to their senses and start offering proper breakfast again, as well as not so rushed.

Re: Qantas Cafe Breakfast

There's probably a balance between sleep and service to consider, but agree the better option needs to be there for the cost of J, however you might pay for your ticket! I had a better cafe breakfast in Y recently, than my last J version of the same...

Sleep is important but I would gladly sacrifice 30 mins of sleep for a proper breakfast. To me this is just cost cutting under the guise of extra sleep. :(

Couldnt agree more its a disgrace and yet another example of a QF Enhancement

Re: Qantas Cafe Breakfast

I have never been a big fan of breakfast on any carrier - certainly not something that would influence me. Disappointing to hear of the poor service by the crew - I have had nothing but great service on the A380 (in J and F) - make sure you email QF about the poor service (and the menu) - they wont learn unless people tell them.

Re: Qantas Cafe Breakfast

You were flying Business. What happened to the breakfast order cards?

Agree that it is poor that a beverage service was not done; if it is not beneath you or your bother I would be sending a stern email to QF.

Even on my SIN/BNE flight of recent in Y, the crew managed to serve a light breakfast to all as well as beverage service. In fact, what I did on that flight was ask the crew if they could set aside a supper meal that I could have during breakfast. Maybe I'm lucky it was a lightly loaded flight or I had a nice crew (or at least they thought I was nice to them), but they were only too happy to oblige, so instead of supper at the normal time I had a nightcap and went to bed.

Yes. Good point. What did happen to the breakfast order cards? The express/café breakfast is the alternative in J isn't it?

NOT anymore

Re: Qantas Cafe Breakfast

NOT anymore

And that is very disappointing. I had the "Cafe Breakfast" now twice between SIN and SYD/BNE and I am hugely disappointed by it:
- Less breakfast items than what you get on a SYD-MEL flight; and
- Very slow coffee service.

I think it is a terrible Qantas cost-cutting program that will likely back-fire by getting fewer J bookings (I am considering if I want to fly QF J again overnight from Asia) and I think the only good way to balance sleep time / proper breakfast is to offer a proper breakfast (WITH a breakfast order card) to those who want it and let the other ones sleeping as long as they want, you know the sleeping masks in the amenity pack are there for a reason :-)

Qantas, bring back the proper J breakfast!
