There are a number of threads now reporting issues with J service ex-HKG, and the "cafe" breakfast.

I've certainly reported my poor experience to QF (and had discussion with them about it), so they should be aware of the issues. Sounds like they are ongoing.

And last time I visited a café, I didn't just order one croissant and a coffee.....

suicide to do this on QF128 from HKG - CX absolutely blows them out of the water with a superior J product and service: they can get the supper service on late night flights done far more rapidly (330 vs 380 and lower crew to pax ratio),

Ditto with breakfast also and nothing is too much trouble. Have asked them not to wake me and woke up 45 mins before landing previously, only too happy to serve a breakfast.

This is what I usually get from my local cafe when I have breakfast there.

I am guessing that the Qantas "Cafe Breakfast" isn't like this? Sounds pretty pathetic actually.

I think it is a terrible Qantas cost-cutting program that will likely back-fire by getting fewer J bookings (I am considering if I want to fly QF J again overnight from Asia) and I think the only good way to balance sleep time / proper breakfast is to offer a proper breakfast (WITH a breakfast order card) to those who want it and let the other ones sleeping as long as they want, you know the sleeping masks in the amenity pack are there for a reason

Qantas, bring back the proper J breakfast!

Who says it is cost cutting? It may well be that many complained they didn't want a full breakfast on flights from Asia at 5am when they had their main meal only 5 hours before. I know that is how I feel on these flights. Now coming from DXB or LAX where there time between meals is greater different story.

So who knows maybe this is Qantas listening to their customers. Maybe.

Valid point, but don't you think that J pax should have the choice between the full breakfast service (with less sleep) and the cafe service (with more sleep)?

If it wasn't cost cutting then they would still pack Full breakfast trays for people that did want them, and cafe breakfast for the rest.

ajw373 If QF were listening to customers who don't want breakfast, they would offer the choice of "No breakfast, let me sleep." which they do!

If Qantas wants to have an abbreviated breakfast service to allow max rest in general on short haul international J, well OK, but if they are going to plonk something in front of you, it could be some fresh fruit, yoghurt, fruit energiser, juice as well as the bloody warm croissant. Its not as if they rush back to get the plate etc of the croissant in so short a time that you wouldn't have time to consume the few extra items.

I usually find it's impossible to sleep once the crew start clattering around with crockery in the galley and then moving up and down the aisles serving people. I don't think it makes any difference whether they are serving "cafe breakfast" or a proper breakfast, they're still going to wake me up while they do it so I might as well at least get a decent food offering out of it instead of just a shrivelled croissant. Even the domestic Y breakfast is better than that.

They're never going to be able to please everyone though. There's always going to be someone unhappy whether they serve full breakfast (disturbing people's sleep), cafe breakfast (see this thread) or no breakfast (more sleep for some, but also hungry people who didn't eat supper).

Thing is that if they start a full b'fast meal service all the lights will be on and there will be trolleys so that those that want to sleep cannot.

I think one issue of the late wake up would be the queue for bathrooms to get changed out of PJs.

As light sleeper, I'm with you on that one. But the same principle applies when the dinner service (apparently favoured by you) is done late at night. I'd prefer no dinner service if the departure is after 10pm so pax (ie me) can simply go to sleep without 3 or 4 courses of clanking etc.

The issue for me is, if they do a 'small' breakfast service on international short haul to allow maximum time at rest before lights on and breakfast trolleys at the ready (I applaud the concept), then do the decent thing and make it more than a crummy ham and cheese croissant. No change to timing; significant increase in satisfaction who partake of the service. No change to those unwillingly woken up.

(and simongr - no PJs on the Manila overnight run! But I take the point. )

I just had my first experience of the cafe breakfast on QF98. Not impressed, I have to say. It really isn't a J offering at all and given we were woken 90 minutes prior to landing, I would have said that was plenty of time to serve a full breakfast.

I didn't get a chance to comment to any of the FAs, but at least a couple of them seemed rather embarrassed to be offering pax the choice of "grapefruit and orange segments", "a Danish pastry" or "a ham and cheese croissant". I was offered a refill of my tea though!

Yep it's interesting that a MEL-SYD J breakfast is better than a medium haul J breakfast.

A week ago, coming back from SIN, I had the energiser, H&C croissant, and tea, and was asked if I wanted the fruit as well.

The real shocker is SQ - supper or breakfast in J, but not both!!
