On Wednesday I flew MEL-HKG-PVG, the first sector on QF29 and the second on KA.

The QF flight, despite being full in Y which meant my WP shadow evaporated, was pretty good. Service was attentive, and made all the better by a fantastic MEL Flounge experience. The manager Charlie and one of the waiters, Imran, were both excellent. Since I arrived at 0630 I was also able to get a long 0730 spa appointment for a back massage. Great way to start a day of flying!

However, the KA flight was a nightmare. Being KA it departed from one of the 500-numbered HKG gates, which meant a bus on to the tarmac rather than an airbridge. A reminder to try getting CX departures from HKG if possible! Boarding was on time with no hint of any delays.

However, we were then stuck on the tarmac for 3.5+hrs. Since this was a 2115 scheduled flight, this meant departing after midnight and not arriving at PVG until about 1430. By the time my cab arrived at my apartment in Shanghai, it was 4am. A terribly long day!

The worst part was that, apart from being an A320 with no IFE or screens to speak of (and shock, horror, no WP greeting on CX/KA for the first time!), we initially taxied out somewhere and then stopped. We were then told that ATC at PVG were preventing us taking off due to low visibility at PVG. What made matters worse was that they shut one engine off to save fuel, so we didn't seem to be getting much aircon. Eventually drinks and then dinner service commenced, with the seatbelt sign remaining on. I remember the Chinese lady next to me being rather angry when told by the FA that she couldn't go to the toilet since the seatbelt sign was on; an angry conversation between the two of us in Mandarin commenced.

After about 1.5-2hrs we returned to the gate, but were not allowed to disembark. We then had to wait even longer for a crew change.

My question is: is it normal/acceptable practice to be kept inside the plane on the tarmac for so long? At what point would KA have been obligated to put us up in HKG for the night, if at all? This was easily my most painful flying experience to date. I would have preferred to go back to the First Lounge. In fact I was so tired that I was tempted to ask to be allowed to deplane and stay in HKG on my own coin.

I can only recount recent observations (thankfully, not experience) from flying regularly in Canada last winter.

When some major snow storms hit the West coast, due to need for de-icing (queues, takes ages), then running low on fuel after being queued in de-icing for too long - so back to refuel - then need to de-ice again etc etc, there were a couple of notorious instances where pax were on board for 5 hours without being allowed to de-plane. Happened a couple of times from memory with that length of time expended on the ground. I was stuck on board one flight for 2 hours on the tarmac while we waited to be de-iced. The runway was closed for an hour, then they had to get the planes de-iced, etc etc etc.

I think the USA have now legislated that pax have to be released after ??4 hours.

But with winter conditions, where the position in the queue is critical, and short windows available for take-off between storms, keeping pax on the plane is deemed the best way to get 'em on their way - eventually.

I made the comment on a FT Air Canada thread that if I was stuck more than, say, 3 or 4 hrs I might be inclined to have a sudden attack of abdominal pain and need evacuation to landside.

So, to answer your question. Yes, regrettably its not uncommon round the world to be stuck on board for +3 hours at a time. I believe its a local country "FAA" equivalent ruling as to how long they can keep you imprisoned.

When I was in DXB, on the way to JFK, suffered the same problem on an EK A380. But was on the tarmac for longer than 3.5 hours before being bussed off back to the terminal.

sympathise... 3.5 hours is a long time for a ground hold. longest I have had is 4 hours ex PEK but at least that was first class so could stretch out. as for use of the WC... if you gotta go you gotta go.. what can they do?

the KA 320s are uncomfortable... in any class. if you have to fly coach then then first row of economy offers a lot of extra legroom, and the emergency exits some extra legroom. and unfortunately you also can get stuck with a 500 gate at hkg.

their widebodies to PVG leave from the regular gates at hkg and are always my preference (although I take cx where possible). there is usually a KA wide body leaving not too long before or after a narrow body... I'd rather stay in hkg an extra hour than take an a320.

not sure what pax rights there are in hkg. but china ATC is china ATC. delays are not uncommon.

Yeah not good. I remember queuing for 2hrs at ord, feels like an eternity.

You could alway fein sickness I guess

OMG,

That is a huge amount of time on the tarmac.

Where you able to get up and stretch the legs

That length of delay in an aircraft cabin going nowhere is painful.

I once waited ~3 hours on the tarmac at LHR after we diverted on a ATH-JFK flight.

That's pretty horrible all right. Longest ground hold I've had was about 2 hours at LAX due to summer thunderstorms at our destination (DFW). Embarked everybody, taxied out to a holding bay then just shut everything down (except the APU). Why they even embarked pax when they must have known there was a problem at the destination is what gets me. Maybe they had to relinquish the gate?

relinquish the gate... but also a case of being 'ready to go' ASAP. there can sometimes be short windows at the destination airport (in between bad weather) and they don't want to miss those.
