Will be down there next Thu / Fri nights - will be eating at Mures upstairs Thu night - god I love that restaurant - just love the outlook upstairs - but need reco for Fri night.

.
We have 5 nights in Hobart and 3 on Bruny Island in a week's time, so doing my homework on places to eat. Any other opinion on Mures? - we do like good seafood, but the trip advisor reviews are all over the place for Mures, so not sure whether to go there or not! We are staying at the Henry Jones Art Hotel, so might eat there one night and Smolt and Ivory Cafe are on the list.

OK OK big ? mark on Mures upper Deck - went there Jan 4 2014 and it was DISASTROUS - lost me for life. It was my ALL TIME favourite Hobart restaurant prior to that - Hobart residents might have more info. Basically it went like this - Mures upper and lower owned by 2 brothers - brother A ran upper - B lower. Upper was always superb - great food - great service - great outlook - good wine list - but then brother A and wife sold there shares to brother B who moved upstairs to run it - DISASTER.

Food went off - service went off - ALL champers from wine list removed and now only Oz bubbles at greatly inflated prices available - just a DISASTER. Was common knowledge amongst locals - no idea if this has changed since then

As for Henry Jones - LOVE that hotel - they take no prisoners rate wise but it's the only hotel in town where Cruiserette will stay. Hope that helps.

Thanks both of you - sounds like the hotel is a good choice but confusion reigns over Mures.....:) The explanation of the brother selling could account for the change.....

Indeed it was common knowledge amongst locals - The Drunken Admiral was another very good seafood restaurant but nothing had the outlook that Mures does / did from upstairs.

Haven't been to Mures upstairs for a couple of years, but it used to be my all time favourite; sad to hear of its current incarnation. Of course it was established and originally run wayyyy back by the father, George Muir (and his wife, name escapes me) and his own fishing boat, parked in the dock outside the windows! (And before they built the current location, it was a small place tucked away at Battery Point). That's where it got its reputation and original standard from.

I have been to downstairs a couple of times recently .. quite OK for bistro type meal but bit noisy with kids on the weekends.

Agree with Henry Jones as probably the best hotel in Hobart. Have only stayed there once, but its reputation sets it apart. There is construction not far from the hotel front. You might want to call them before you arrive and check out any noise / room location issues (there may be none).

FM Garagistes is meant to be pretty good, but I see some ordinary reviews on TA. Actually, looking at the TA rankings for Hobart restaurants, I wouldn't take too much notice. Obviously there are cafes and pie shops mixed in with the sit-down restaurants but some of the reviews (and rankings) just seem bizarre.

North Hobart (Elizabeth Street) is a trendy restaurant strip; only 10 mins by cab from the HJAH. Worth looking twice at places there.

ZUM is a good café on Salamanca Place and there are a couple of others there too.

It is - but it's different. Seating is at communal benches, so not a 'romantic'-style restaurant. Novel food and the overall experience shades to the novel than the traditional and that may not appeal to many.

Zum looks nice - I find rankings on TA mean very little - reviews are more interesting but tastes are so different (and what people are prepared to spend on a meal).

Given we are celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary later this year, food is more important that romance. However Garagistes looked a bit too Japanese influenced for my tastes - probably suit Mr FM but given I am doing the research he misses out.....

F m may well be your best bet is to seek out info from staff in IXL Long Bar which is beside entrance to HJAH. The guys there make fabulous coughtails and have their finger on the pulse re Salamanca Place restaurants - indeed it was there we got the full lowdown on Mures decline after we had eaten there. AS we are all aware the restaurant trade so fickle - good ones spring up here and there so quickly - and go downhill just as quickly - I love wandering Salamanca and restaurant / people watching and then making a choice - it certainly is a unique, beautiful and fun place to visit.

O/T but If you have any tendency towards old books, then Astrolabe Booksellers upstairs towards the eastern end of Salamanca is worth a visit. Genuine antiquarian place.

Daci and Daci Bakers a block up from the waterfront on Murray St is a great place for a coffee and pastry, too (can't miss it - has an outside deck which juts out onto the sloping footpath). Not sure if they do lunches.

Thanks for that - Mr FM loves old books. Daci and Daci is already on the list - sounds nice for breakfast.

That's a good idea - I will definitely do that!

Come on! - don't give up that easily! Go for both. ;):p.
We did have a romantic dinner on the beach at Four Seasons Bora Bora for our 30th. Our waiter was rather blown away - I think they see so many 2nd and 3rd time round weddings there that he decided ours was a love story and presented us with a fan. :)

Well the Henry Jones is one hotel mrsdrron wont ever stay at again.Definite noise problem.
And I would never eat at their restaurant again.Had a dish which came with"home made"tomato sauce.Found a plastic lid sealer in the meal and they accused me of putting it in.Not only very rude but their sauce obviously came from a commercial bottle.
