I tested this thory this year with flights on EK in F/J from SYD/AUH/IST/(BA that sector),LHR/AUH/SYD.
Taxes return to Europe/UK (ignoring the IST/LHR on BA) were about $200 (max)
Via Asia try $800/$1000!
Looked yesterday at SYD/AUH/MXP in F/J return (next July/Aug) and taxes are $200
On SG/CX via SIN or HKG the same configuration shows taxes at $800-$1000
Maybe that's a key reason why QF and EK are hooking up, as the Middle East is looking for flight traffic and doesnt smash the traveller with expensive taxes on the way
Any rate its about $700-$800 of funds back into the party budget by going on EY via AUH
"Happy Jan"
