I tested this thory this year with flights on EK in F/J from SYD/AUH/IST/(BA that sector),LHR/AUH/SYD.

Taxes return to Europe/UK (ignoring the IST/LHR on BA) were about $200 (max)

Via Asia try $800/$1000!

Looked yesterday at SYD/AUH/MXP in F/J return (next July/Aug) and taxes are $200

On SG/CX via SIN or HKG the same configuration shows taxes at $800-$1000

Maybe that's a key reason why QF and EK are hooking up, as the Middle East is looking for flight traffic and doesnt smash the traveller with expensive taxes on the way

Any rate its about $700-$800 of funds back into the party budget by going on EY via AUH

It depends on what you consider to be "taxes".

EK do not charge any [YQ/YR] fuel levies.

Threes a considerable difference right there!

Don't mind what the airlines call it, its still cash out that you pay through Asia and not through Middle East :D

Surely the thing that matters is the final Net Price that one pays taxes etc only come into play if booking an award seat in my opinion

Exactly - EK base fares are essentially higher than the base fare of QF, SQ, BA etc ...

Sometime it works in one's favour, other times, not.

More accurately it's the difference between the choice of carrier.

If the QF/EK alliance gets up, if you were to examine the auxiliary charges of a SYD-DXB-LHR flight on EK metal vs QF metal, you'll find the latter will be substantially higher than the former due to the QF fuel surcharge (code YQ).

VA/EY have a similar comparison (at least to the extent of SYD-AUH.

Interestingly QF will probably need to 'create' a new fuel surcharge 'zone' for the Middle East once it gets the alliance approved. This will probably be more expensive than the YQ for Asia (just comparing the YQ to fly to the mid-points of the Euro routes).

It will also be interesting to see if QF will collect YQ on flights operated by EK (and either sold as EK or QF codes). Naturally by rights, they should not; as for the reverse (EK collecting YQ on QF operated flights) that should also be interesting.

If you fly EK via Asia you get the same result. It has nothing to do with where you fly, but rather who you fly. It really only makes a difference on award bookings or "round the world" type fares. As pointed out above base fares on other carriers are usually lower to account for this.

There is also a massive difference on UK apd when routing via sin vs middle east. Particularly visible when flying on premium cabins.

This is a bit of an urban myth. The difference applies ONLY if chosing to stopover in the middle east. If connecting on a flight departing in < 24 hrs it makes NO difference. If doing stopover, the charges are $203AUD (via ME, with stopover) vs $287 AUD (no stopover, or via Asia with stopover) - and half that in economy.

If the APD is a big influencing factor in decision making, far better to fly out of Italy, Spain, Ireland or somewhere it is low/not charged, and find an independent way of getting to that port (ie not on same PNR).
