Something very weird. Was in Germany clearly a day pass destination. Made two short calls on the same day to Australia and was charged $60. I could see this in my recent charges area. Is this something that automatically gets fixed up when they generate the bill or do I have a problem?

Use the text function on the telstra app and raise it with them and a screen shot of the charges. It does not sound correct - unless your plan was ’simplified’/changed by them which can happen too. I am going to check
mine as my mobile plan was recently changed (not initiated by me) and I always use my telstra mobile O/S as it (usually) works out well.

No idea if this would help, but did you try enabling wifi-calling?

Telstra has been an absolute basket case for me attempting roaming now that I can travel internationally again 🙄 I have given up trying roaming with Telstra. Optus has been much more helpful with roaming.

With Optus not Telstra but I had the same thing happen. Started chat with Optus and they said it would be adjusted when the bill was issued. It worried me as I had hundreds of dollars charged but they all disappeared when the bill was calculated.

I'm on their upfront mobile plans and didn't see any voice call charges other than the $10 a day

I tried to activate roaming today (it's always been active so no idea why it was off) and I'm still showing as being on Telstra rather than a local network. I've activated twice and still no luck.

are you on a plan or prepaid? Can you do wifi calling?

If this is your first time roaming since the pandemic, you may be about to find out how drastically Telstra cut roaming availability while we weren't able to travel. Apparently they will reintroduce it but I have no idea when or in what stages. Telstra prepaid cannot currently get roaming anywhere, full stop. Not even a daily pass or wifi calling.

Plan. I have a local esim for data but it would be nice to receive text messages.

No issues in NZ a few months back, and @TomVexille is roaming on Telstra with no issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am now in that boat
I was ‘helpfully’ changed to a ‘simpler’ plan prepaid monthly and now no roaming
I have four weeks to fix or come up w alternative
Its Ok where there is Wifi - can use whats app but otherwise🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
It would have been nice to know

That’s interesting. I thought I’d be able to do at least wifi calling

Telstra told me this morning charges will be waived when bill issued. I politely pointed out that it doesn't address the underlying issue of why it happened and they responded glitch in system. Will update thread mid next month when bill comes

When I tried wifi calling while I was in Hawaii, I was able to connect, but only to a Telstra recorded message which told me I wasn't eligible for wifi calling. I was attempting to call a local Hawaii number so I just used the phone in my hotel room instead (after finding out from reception that local calls were free :p).

I have installed an app through work that allows me to use my mobile while OS to call Australian numbers as if I was in Australia. But the app won't let me call any number that isn't an Australian number. The app is called 3CX I think.

Were you able to receive texts ok?

Ive had a couple of texts come through despite my phone indicating I'm on Telstra and not a local network. I've got an esim for data fortunately.

I had no recent problems with texts when on wifi in Singapore and USA.

Not recently, but in 2019 when I was in French Polynesia, I found that there was no roaming to that destination and although I was able to receive most texts eg from family and friends, I was unable to log into my QFF account because I was unable to receive the SMS code. I think QF sends it only as SMS and not via internet. Since then I have downloaded the QF app which has solved the problem for accessing my QFF account when OS.

But the TLDR version - if you rely on SMS codes as 2FA to log into anything eg bank accounts, have a backup plan for being able to log on when OS in case the provider doesn't send the SMS via internet.

Think I'll have a whinge here too. When roaming overseas, the network chosen will often be a slow one (or is telstra that much better?). Whilst in London, 99% of the time, I would be on the O2 network and that meant no reception at most tube stations, whereas someone on EE could keep surfing the net.
