Not sure if this has been mentioned on here before, but if not:

Telstra seems to have quietly launched 'Telstra Travel Pass' that are very similar to Optus and Vodafone's $5~ a day roaming packs.

Just thought I would put it out there, considering they haven't really advertised it to customers I just stumbled upon it!

This has actually been around for some time and replaces their old arrangements which was for lower volume and much lower pricing (around $30 per month IIRC)

Sorry, I don't consider $300 for 1.5 gb over 30 days to be good value.

Are you confusing data packs with this product? this includes UNLIMITED calls and SMS

Also just comparing Vodafone's offer vs telstra's pass, telstra's include a lot of countries that people may frequent on here, for example Malaysia, India, Philippines, UAE, South Africa are included in Telstra's pass but not Vodafone's.

I use the Telstra travel pass extensively. For me it is really good value. Plenty of data and free calls to and from Australia and within the zone you're in.

The outbound call quality usually appears to be VoIP quality so I assume Telstra have implemented some sort of low cost routing but for $70 for a week of stress free calls and enough data its great.

I just used it in Thailand it was GREAT!!!! $ 70 for 10 days unlimited sms, and calls. About time they came to the party. They only have 2 zones though and South America isn't included.

Not bad if you make a lot of calls, but who in Asia makes calls these days?
If you're in China it's wechat & qq, line in japan, korea it's kakao and everywhere else is whatsapp. That's how business is done. Calls are so 2000. And even then if you're a westerner or mainlander you're on facetime audio.

It's all data. I mean - look at the telco booths when you land into any asian airport - everyone sells data only sim plans.

The first company to crack the global sim/data price point will win all the biz!

Back to business, first of all there is NO FACEBOOK/FACETIME/YAHOO etc,etc in China, audio or otherwise, even Hong Kong you get blocked! Secondly, not everyone can afford unlimited access to to the internet/WIFI whilst over seas. ........ "Jump back to reality, OOOOOH, there goes gravity"

I understand your argument, and very valid and impressive! for a 1950's boy???, but please! You can not compare "Asia" (ESPECIALLY CHINA and Korea!!!) by which, I assume you mean Hong Kong/Main Land to the rest of Asia, as you and I both know Whatts app is it! Hong Kong is very quickly losing it's "privileges". Which, makes the developers brilliant, and is why FB paid a ridiculous $19 Billion for Whattsapp, as it was their only way in after refusing full rights to the government, and were blocked out of the China market, which we both know is HUGE! And on retrospect, I now think $19 Billion was a bargain!

I do however, concur Sir, your point is VERY valid and is sound, but only if you're a WP1, staying in 5 star (with a stayAngel of course) or in free WIFI range

One caveat on this: it is only available to personal or small business customers. Business and Government customers are ineligible.

I wonder if it's just me who has absolutely no idea what you are talking about, Alice!

I suppose it's good for me that they actually include PNG, but surely those costs aren't "fairly reasonable". $140 for a fortnight, especially if it is some kind VoIP as Skype and Viber haven't managed to get it to work so I doubt Telstra will. I've come to the conclusion one of the most reliable and cheapest form of communications in PNG is simply having a Digicell SIM and buying top up scratchies. I'd love to hear from anyone who's found a better suggestion.

I do. But I make a lot of calls/txts to friends and family and can't quite rely on wifi when I'm there.

IMO, $10/day is too steep for me to use this. I'll keep buying a prepaid sim when I'm there.

Using telstra travel pass overseas now and it's definitely not VoIP or VoIP quality its normal phone network quality here in HK. If you have had bad quality somewhere is more likely is the local network or the international calling trunk the local carrier uses.

1. The two zone system can be a pain when you are travelling in and out of the SEA countries. I often have to have the two zones running/overlapping.

2. The agony it takes to get the plan invoked when you are travelling! Firstly the "Telstra School Madam" voice barking the directions and numbers, then finally they Filipino call centre girl who assumes you know nothing and starts from the beginning. It can take up to 10 minutes and I use about 5 - 8 plans a trip, so please Telstra put some shortcuts in.....

I moved to Telstra prepaid last year and really like the fact that my top up value keeps increasing and rolling over as long as I add credit before the last topup expires.

The real beauty of this is I can use that $30 building up each month to purchase data roaming packs. Last trip I was able to get by on my "free" 300MB data pack for $85 while in SIN / KUL / TPE. If I'd bought a sim in each country would have cost me $50+

So far only problem I've had is my phone wouldn't connect to data when in South Korea.

I head overseas 3 to 4 times a year for holidays and I'll usually get a local sim, but now I have data when I land which can be very handy for using google maps if not quite sure how to get where I'm going.

Basically I'm building up $360 of credit each year which is enough to get me a 300MB roaming pack for each trip away, though sometimes I can get away with a $29 100MB pack.

Even my parents are now on Viber, so I don't really need to be able to make real calls, though I could always use viber or skype out if that was really necessary.

As an almost 50 year customer of Telstra, I only just discovered that I was "enabled" for the Telstra day pass that I am planning to use on my forthcoming trip to Chile.

Has anyone had recent experience using the Telstra Day in Chile? I note an earlier comment that the service was not available in South America but the Telstra coverage map shows Chile as included.

My original plan was to purchase a local SIM card but I read that Chile has introduced new regulations that international visitors are required to complete a formal "eligibility" process to be entitled to purchase a local SIM card.
