Telstra Travel Pass

As an almost 50 year customer of Telstra, I only just discovered that I was "enabled" for the Telstra day pass that I am planning to use on my forthcoming trip to Chile.

Has anyone had recent experience using the Telstra Day in Chile? I note an earlier comment that the service was not available in South America but the Telstra coverage map shows Chile as included.

No specific experience roaming in Chile, however if the telstra site says it works there then should be ok.

Travel pass has been great for me whilst it is still expensive for a multi week trip the convenience of not having to buy a local SIM everywhere as well as having my aust number with me.

I noted on telstra's new plan the$129 and above includes day pass roaming for free and 1 gig of data per month (for roaming) good value of you travel overseas alot.

I moved from Telstra because of the overseas charges. $5 on Vodafone per day and i can access my home usage allowances.
Telstra whack you twice. You pay for your home allowances and the you pay again for additional allowances to use while your away as you unable to use yr home allowances.

I use it for Maps, facebook, calls home. Awesome.

Yeah but also telstra has an extremely surperior list of countries including a number of recently added ones that i noticed, like Qatar, Sri Lanka.etc. also telstra has south korea & UAE big tourist destinations voda does not.

Used it over the past 5 weeks in Mexico, Guatemala, and USA ..... for some reason I thought the daily data allowance was 100MB, but it turned out to be 200MB a day.

The increase to 200MB per day is new. Even those in my local Telstra store did not know about it when I enquired before Christmas...

After 35 years i dropped Telstra and went with Optus. I'm saving close to $200 to $400 a trip; around $3,000 per annum. I picked up the $106 plan with unlimited calls to many places in the world. Telstra's changes in travel passes a a few years ago almost doubled my bill. Bonus with Optus is i dont have have to go through the travel pass routine with Telstra and remember when they run out. Another bonus is I get the EPL game package free.

I picked up the $106 plan with unlimited calls to many places in the world.

Is this still available? I find the Optus site unclear, but I see plans at $120 which includes 10 days of travel pack, but I haven't found $106 with unlimited calls (to I assume, Zone 1 countries?).

If I'm reading the Optus offers correctly, it appear they offer both prepaid and post paid roaming rates and for my selected country comparison of PNG (usually a more expensive country) prepaid at $1/min for send/receive calls and $0.50 for sending text or free to receive text plus $1/Mb data or on a plan you can roam at $1.50/min for send/receive calls (the other rates the same as prepaid) or buy a travel pack (plan only) offering unlimited talk and text plus 100Mb of data for $10/day up to 31 consecutive days (I assume that can be as many times a year as you like, provided it doesn't exceed the 31 consecutive day limit?).

Amaysim, which I currently use, also uses the Optus network but is $1/min for post-paid send/receive calls,$0.50 for sending text or free to receive text plus $0.50/Mb data, so cheaper than Optus, but no Travel Plan option.

Vodafone is unlimited talk and text for $5/day and it appears they also allow your full data allowance as per your plan, but is limited to a max of 90 days per calendar year. After that they charge $1/min for send/receive calls and $0.75 for sending text or free to receive text plus $1/Mb for data.

The Telstra version seems to be unlimited days possible, provided you pay your $10/day. The excess data is at $3/Mb, which seems awfully excessive. Furthermore, the Optus unused data rolls over whereas unused Telstra data expires at the end of each day however with Telstra, you get 200Mb of data which is double what Optus gives.

For me, I don't use roaming much, but as I work O/S for about 200 days a year, Vodafone is limited (but still possible as the roaming rates are similar to what I currently pay. Both Telstra and Optus are possible to give the 200 days on the travel pack, but $2000 a year (plus the plan rate) would buy 33 hours of talk time on a $1/min rate and the Amaysim plan I'm on costs $40/month for unlimited talk and text at home, plus 15G of data plus unlimited international calls to 10 select countries and 300min/month of calls to 22 select countries.

It seems controlling roaming (easy with Amaysim, not sure about the others) and paying the going rate seems the better option unless you're mainly after data or an avid talker. For those after data, the Voda plan seems best as it allows all your normal data usage you chose when selecting a plan.

I'd like to hear more about that Optus $106 plan with unlimited international calls, as that may be exactly what I need!

The excess data on Telstra is an automatic 500mb topup @ $10 lasts for 30 days which is about 0.02c per mb.

Telstra - What is an International Day Pass - Support

"These inclusions are based on Australian Eastern Standard Time. After 200MB, if you go over your 200MB daily data allowance, we’ll automatically give you a 500MB Data Top-Up for $10.
It’s available for use in Eligible Countries and will remain valid for 31 days from when it was added. You can start using it each day that you exceed your daily data allowance, until you have used it all up, or this top-up expires."

I just checked my bill and just some small corrections; its a $105 plan and its a "small business" one. Last month i did 6hr 42m of international calls and total was $8.42 as they bill for Greece (credit risk????). Ironically when i call from Greece back to home its free! You can get a "bolt on" at $10 per month which will give 150 mins to greece and other non covered countries.

My phone bill under Telstra was in some months nothing short of horrendous!

Data is king for me when I travel and the Telstra plan is sadly inadequate.

In Europe especially I just grab SIM cards from providers and use those. Sure I don’t get phone calls or SMS on my Aussie phone but I am content with that. The people who need to contact me know how to get me. I find I save a fortune than relying on the $10 charge (and then some for excess data).

The EU rules about roaming now are just wonderful.

A dual SIM Android phone is the best solution for non business travellers (using a dual SIM S8+ at the moment).

Local SIM for cheap data at full 4G speed along with my Telstra SIM to receive SMS for family/friends and sites that require TFA.

A month in the UK and Europe with 11GB of data using an EE SIM for AUD34 (just over AUD1.13 per day).

I normally use a Starhub prepaid Happy Roam SIM for travel in Asia at a cost of SGD5.00 for 1GB over three days (AUD1.60 per day)...

I really like the new Telstra plans, much better than their old scheme where you paid a fixed amount for 7, 14 or 30 days (or whatever the periods were) regardless of whether you actually needed all of those days. Under the new plan you only pay the $10 if you use your data or make a call which I don’t always do if spending the day in the hotel or office. I travel a fair bit and haven’t exceeded the old 100mb data allowance a day so 200mb will be heaps for me. The auto top up also means there are no nasty bill surprises after returning home. I almost made the switch to Vodafone for their $5 Plan until I read the fine print that said it was due to expire last year and the guy in the shop couldn’t give me any comfort that it would continue so wasn’t prepared to dump Telstra for something that might have been short lived.

Does it include calls to other countries other than Australia ie you are in France and call Singapore and what about local calls in the country you are in. I am interested in calls rather than data. Thanks
