Day 7

Woke up and went downstairs for breakfast. It was a similar setup to Capri only with a slightly more extensive buffet. Tables were all in the open courtyard near the hotel entrance. A lovely setting. Again, a great way to start the day.

We were pretty full so decided to wander around the town to work some of it off. Such a fantastic place!

Day 7 – Continued………………….

Next it was beach time. Walked over to Fornillo beach which is a smaller beach around the other side of a rocky outcrop, about 5 minutes from the main beach.

This had been the first place we had come to in 2018 with NoName Jnr. It had been cold and windy but he had still gone in for a paddle. Do 4 year olds have no sense of temperature or something? Anyway, it was much warmer this time and we repeated yesterday’s dose of a swim and relax in the sun.

Back over to the town and back up to our hotel to again relax by the pool.

Day 7 – Continued………………….

Dinner time came around and this was one we were looking forward to. Mrs NoName had searched for and booked a couple of restaurants and for tonight she had come up with La Sponda which is a restaurant at the luxury hotel Le Sirenuse. The hotel is very high end with rooms appearing to go for $5,000+ per night during the summer. If you feel like coming in the middle of winter you can stay for the bargain price of approx. $1,500 or so per night. The restaurant is featured in the Michelin Guide so we had high expectations and they were definitely met.

We walked the short distance from our hotel and pretty much from the moment we walked in were wowed. It was exceptional service. Taken to our table overlooking Positano, we started with a glass of prosecco an enjoyed the amazing views.

We were also treated to a trio of musicians going from table to table singing requests to the guests. Anything from a traditional Italian song to That’s Amore. They had maybe half a dozen or so songs in their repertoire and it was a nice touch. We decided to skip dessert in favour of our usual gelato but we weren’t quite done here. Last up for the evening were some little cakes and a glass of limoncello. Neither of us enjoy limoncello in the slightest so it won’t come as a surprise to hear that this was simply their standard offering at the end of a meal and included in the price.

7F7661E6-C636-4F89-A6AA-06CBC71E611D.jpeg

Speaking of price, the total came to €309 including the bottle of red we ordered with the meal. Expensive – yes. But it was a fantastic meal and the setting with the views out over the town were pretty much unbeatable.

Nicely filled, we went for the usual gelato at the beach (same place as last night) before hitting the hay.

Day 8

We awoke nice and early at 5:30 and despite Mrs NoName’s grumbling, hopped out of bed, put on some exercise clothes and headed out the door just before 6. I had been looking forward to today’s activity probably the most out of any. As those who have read previous trip reports would know, I love to get out in nature and walk/hike when I can. Today we were going to do one of the iconic Amalfy coast hikes, The Path Of The Gods. I had read about this after our previous visit and with the stunning scenery that came up with every google search it was a must do for me. At only around 5km + 2.5km from the end back to Positano, it wasn’t going to be the most strenuous walk, but it sure was going to be memorable. Despite her complaints, I knew Mrs NoName would love it too.

The hotel had been kind enough to put together a breakfast pack with pastries, fruit & drinks for us which was much appreciated. We grabbed it and made our way up some stairs and the 5 minute walk to the bus stop.

3FEF20E1-1B21-4587-8212-A1719BBE93B5.jpeg

Bus soon arrived and we were on our way. We had been on this bus previously when we did a day trip to Amalfy. It can be a pretty hair-raising experience as the road is narrow and winds across the cliff. When there is traffic it is slow going but thankfully, at just after 6 in the morning there wasn’t much to speak of. Around 40 minutes later we hopped off and awaited a second bus to take us up into the mountains to the small town of Bomerano.

C55FFC87-C9EE-422D-8ED0-BC3C208B2288.jpeg
Up up we went! This was an interesting ride for sure! Tight roads and slow going but it was going to be worth it. Another 45 min and we were hopping off in Bomerano ready for the real fun to begin.

The trail goes from Bomerano to Nocelle and you can hike in whatever direction you like. We chose an early morning start in Bomerano as the temperature would be cooler, the views would become increasingly dramatic and the east to west direction meant that there would be no sun in our faces.

Day 8 – Continued………..

A short walk and we were at the trailhead. Pretty much immediately the brilliant views saw Mrs NoName glad that she had joined me.

After Km or so the trail splits and you have the option of taking a higher or lower route which eventually join up further towards the end. I had read the views were more dramatic on the lower route so that is what we took.

There was still another couple of Km to the trailhead at the end so we pushed on. Past the junction where the previously mentioned upper and lower tails joined back together.

From here we needed to get back to Positano. While there was a bus that could take us back, I was happy to walk. And besides, who knows how long it would take for the next bus to arrive. So off we went down the stairs.

By the time we had gotten to the bottom I had counted 1,824 (give or take) and its fair to say that neither the knees nor Mrs NoName were happy. Still, we were down and after a 10 minute walk along the road, we were back in Positano.

Day 8 – Continued………..

We were hungry so made a beeline for a restaurant on the side of the road with some tables looking out over the view. Li Galli Bistro. It was a great spot to catch some rest and grab some lunch. We ordered couple of pasta dishes which were nice but nothing special. We didn’t mind though as all we wanted at this point really was a rest and something in our stomachs.

Half an hour later we were done and off back to the hotel and more specifically the pool. Same routine as the previous days – relax, a drink or two and the occasional dip in the water.

Day 8 – Continued………..

Dinner came around fairly quickly so we went off to get changed and then back downstairs to the hotel restaurant – Al Palazzo. The restaurant is outside on the lower level of the hotel courtyard, just below where they serve breakfast. Its certainly a beautiful setting.

Lamb for my main. Like the steak this was great. Recommend.

We didn’t order anything for dessert, however they brought out these things which were basically little chocolates on a stick with some nuts etc on the outside. They were pretty good even though we absolutely did not need them.

EA4EB282-361D-4ABD-9CF8-7645FD23461A.jpeg

Overall, Al Palazzo was a great dinner option. Price was also quite reasonable coming in at around the €200 mark which included a €60 bottle of wine. Would definitely recommend dining here, particularly if you’re staying in-house.

Finally, we went for a short walk down to the beach for another gelato and a final look at Positano at night.

Day 9

We woke up to the sad realisation that our time in Positano was almost over, and very soon the holiday itself would be as well. We grabbed breakfast downstairs, came back up to finish packing and then made our way down to the beach for one last swim. It wasn’t as crowded as a couple of days earlier (perhaps the difference between a Saturday and a Tuesday 😊) but the water was just as refreshing. Swam around for a while before returning to the towel on the shore.

The time came to return to the hotel to finish packing and chill out for a bit prior to our departure. Gathered everything together, spent maybe an hour lying around and then decided to take off. Paid the bill, took one final look at what had been a fantastic place to stay and took the short walk down to the pier. We were off to Rome for the night before our flight out the next morning – ferry to Salerno followed by train to FCO.
We were on the 1:30pm departure through Travelmar. Cost was €32 for 2xPAX + 2xBags. Good deal for what is a quick, efficient mode of transport. Hopped on and made ourselves comfortable and then we were on our way!

The ferry stops briefly in Amalfi to drop off/take on passengers. No time to hope off but definitely enough time to take a few photos. We had done a day trip here last time and enjoyed it. Perhaps an excuse to come back again?

Pretty quickly we were off again and then pretty quickly after that (it seemed anyway) came in to dock in Salerno right on time. Total time 75 minutes. Nice! We grabbed our bags and hopped off, joined by a US couple we had begun talking to. They were on the same train to Rome as us so suggested we walk over to the station together. I remembered it being very close and easy to get to and so it proved again. Five minutes later we were sitting down at a café across the road passing some time before our departure. An hour later we made our way to the platform to await boarding.

Climbed aboard, found our seat and then we were away. Uneventful ride other than when the ticket inspector came around. Apparently the type of mask we were wearing wasn’t acceptable. She sent me to the dining car to buy the right type. Just under 90 minutes later we were of at Roma Termini and then onto the Leonardo Express to FCO. Total cost for the train appears to have come to A$101 for the two of us.

Arrived at our destination which very conveniently was a very short walk to the terminal. We went there first and grabbed a couple of wraps for dinner before heading back in the other direction and a 500m walk to our hotel for the evening – Hilton Rome Airport. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any photos however it was a more than adequate option. Spacious lobby with a bar and restaurant. The room itself was just the standard room, neat and tidy, reasonable size, possibly in need of a bathroom reno. However, given the location and convenience for our 8am departure the next morning. Cost was just under A$250 booked through Flight Centre (as was the Naples hotel) as we had some old gift cards that needed to be used).
It had been a short but busy week and a bit so we were pretty much spent. Watched some of the tennis (in German) on TV before calling it a night.

Day 10

We were up and away very early as the SQ flight out of FCO was leaving just after 8am. Mrs NoName had some tax to claim back from a couple of purchases so after checking out we sped off to the terminal and had her goods inspected. Dropped the bags off, straight through security and headed towards the gate. Got all the way there and realised the Star Alliance lounge was in the other direction so since we had plenty of time we walked the 10 minutes back to have a look. Mrs NoName wasn’t happy that we had gone the wrong way and when we reached the lounge her mood didn’t improve at all. The place was average to say the least. No self serve food options at all with everything needing to be ordered from the counter near the kitchen which was unfortunately staffed by people who didn’t seem to appreciate being asked to do anything. The space was neat and tidy but that was probably its only redeeming feature. Perhaps it is still suffering a covid malaise and may get better but in any event, I would not recommend turning up early specifically for a visit here. We sat down for 20 minutes, had a bottle of water and some basic unmemorable food then left.

Back to our gate on the other side of the terminal and after a short wait it was time to jump on the bus to take us across the tarmac to the waiting plane.

SQ351 – FCO-CPH
12D & 12F

Glad to be on the long haul version of the SQ A350 after having to endure the region version on our quick visit to SIN back in April. Not that there was going to be any other option here but it certainly felt a lot more spacious. First leg was a quick hop to CPH (presumably because at this time they either didn’t have the demand for standalone FCO or CPH flights or lacked the planes. Anyway, the approx. two hours went by quickly and pleasantly. Managed to fit in a breakfast service.

Still no paper menus, so had to find them using the wifi.

98DA2CE6-4AE2-4B05-8860-FEAB2236D166.png

Spinach Omelette for me. This was nothing special to be honest. Not unpleasant but just run-of-the-mill.

FA64ED3F-B8D7-4A4A-9E87-73F1F61F3563.jpeg

Mrs NoName went for the Udon Noodles with Chicken. Don’t recall her making any comment either way so suspect this was also nothing special.

3FA9CCF1-9EB6-471E-B1AF-E8ACD4A8CEEB.jpeg

Once service was over it was more or less time to land. Off the plane quickly and off to find the lounge.

Day 10 – Continued……….

Made our way through the terminal more or less in the direction of the C-gates for the next flight and ended up finding the SAS Lounge on the way, near gate C10 prior to passport control. The lounge is split over two levels with the upper level being for Star Gold members and the lower being for business class passengers. While being Star Gold myself (thanks to the KF promo earlier this year giving elite miles for credit card points transfers) meant we could have gone to either, we stuck to the downstairs area which appeared bigger.

Lounge was nice with plenty of seating and a couple of other zones spaced throughout. Despite the space I could easily see this getting very crowded at peak times. Over one side was the food section, all self serve. There were plenty of breakfast options available as well as drinks. Carlsberg beer was on offer everywhere in both bottles and on tap. Despite it being still pretty early, I thought I should have one. We were in Denmark after all.

Slight drawback to the design here with the lights dangling down far too low. I hit my head on this one a few times which Mrs NoName of course found hilarious.

F1C621C3-5318-4F91-BD24-67A5B186F8AD.jpeg

I enjoyed the lounge. While I wouldn’t want to spend hours here it was a big step up from what we had in FCO. Definitely impressed with it and would be happy to visit again. 45 minutes later though, and we thought we’d better get moving. The line for passport control was quite slow but 20 minutes later we were through and at our gate ready for boarding. On we went, back into our same comfy seats and ready to go.

Same plane and same seats so definitely no complaints. Glass of champagne pre-departure and then away we went. Lunch served soon after takeoff.

For some reason the chicken satay never made an appearance which was disappointing. So straight to the cod appetiser. Quite good.

We both had the Pork Knuckle for main as the FA had raved to me about it. To be honest I probably would have chosen it anyway. It was pretty good without being spectacular. Choosing again would depend on the other items on the menu.

Mrs NoName gave dessert a miss but I certainly didn’t. I was offered everything but decided to restrain myself and only try the cheesecake and ice cream. Both quite nice.

Watched a movie before deciding it was time for a sleep. Asked the FA to turn the bed and then it was off to sleep. My previous experience with the beds in SQ J has been quite positive and this was no exception. I know they can be too hard for many people but I like this and find I get a great sleep. Smashed out maybe 6 hours before deciding to get up. Ordered a bowl of noodles which were just a packet of the 2-minute variety but tasted good nonetheless.

Turned on another movie and before long it was time for breakfast.

Again, we both had the same option. Yep, very exciting eating habits in the NoName household. Plate of fruit to start followed by the pancake. Both pretty good.

The end of the flight was fast approaching. Had everything cleared and then strapped in for landing at SIN.

Day 10A

Walked off and made our way towards the newly refurbished T3 Silverkris Lounge. We had been here about 6 weeks earlier on our way back from visiting Mrs NoName’s family in SIN and had really liked it. A definite improvement on the old lounge. Grabbed a shower then sat down for another light breakfast. I mean, why not right? For some reason we didn’t get any photos which is unusual, however I think the lounge has been pretty thoroughly reviewed across a few different threads in the SQ section of the forum.

An hour or so later and it was time to get moving. Our connecting flight to BNE was departing out of T1 which I thought was unusual. Is it? Who knows. Anyway, we had a bit of a walk ahead of us. Decided to skip taking the train and made our way through the terminal.

Relieved to find that our gate was the first one we came to in T1, so essentially right next to the last T3 gate. Went through gate security, milled around for a bit before the boarding announcement came and on we went for the last flight of the trip.

SQ245 – SIN-BNE
11D & 11F

I’d logged on a couple of days prior to find that row 11 was vacant and so I pounced. Proved to be a shrewd move. We were in the long haul version of the A350 again so not as critical as if it were the regional version but still, the additional leg space was a definite winner.

We were away pretty quickly and 45 min or so later the lunch service began. Apologies, no menu photo this time unfortunately. Lets blame it on tiredness at the end of a trip.

Started with some kind of mango and crab salad which it has to be said was pretty average. Did not enjoy this and don’t even think I finished it which is rare for me.

I had ordered a beef burger through Book The Cook for my main. Tasted pretty good as far as plane burgers go however the lack of chips was disappointing. As you can see, there is literally nothing else on the plate.

Mrs NoName had a bowl of prawn noodles which tasted as good as the looked. A winner in her opinion.

Again, she passed on dessert. Again, I didn’t. Only went for the ice cream though this time. No photo however was similar to what was in my previous post.

Wiled away the day watching a movie before I thought I would test out the Super Nintendo Mini again. I had brought this along when travelling to SIN six weeks earlier but the A350 regional seat did not have the required HDMI port so was unable to be used. Good news – the long haul version does have it! So I hooked it up. Like my experience in EK F on the A380, it was very simple to get going. Plugged it in and a message on the screen asked me if I wanted to connect. Clicked ‘yes’ and away I went. While it worked easily enough, there was a noticeable lag time when playing. Not huge, but enough that it effected the gameplay in a negative way. So for the likely zero people who are interested – for playing video game consoles through an in-flight entertainment system – EK > SQ.

With all that out of the way the only thing left to do was relax as the last hour or so of the flight passed. We declined a snack towards the end as I think we were pretty much done with airline food for the moment. Landed on time round 7:30, through all the immigration formalities and quickly out to a cab for the short ride home.

Home sweet home!

And that was that! The trip was over. What a fantastic ten (12) days it had been! While it had been significantly shorter than the 4+ weeks we had enjoyed on the honeymoon 10 years ago, it had been just as memorable. As I mentioned at the start, that trip all those years ago had helped inspire me to play the points game and ultimately to join this forum. Being able to travel in the fashion seen over the last few pages and indeed that we see all over this forum is an outcome I had never dreamed of. What a resource!

Here’s to taking the next trip and to writing the next report!
