Just to close off the thread, Qantas came back and still refused any sort of compensation. So I've followed through and changed my credit cards from Qantas to Altitude and will actively avoid using Qantas in future (as well as influencing all friends & family to avoid them wherever possible).

and avoiding the dreaded Dubai 'no information' pit. After a recent trip through there again we also experienced the Emirates care factor when dealing with Qantas issues. "Qantas, what does Qantas mean to us...Who is this Qantas?. As per Dubai Connect fortunately we have young Mr Turbo living there so stress getting away. Happy travels for the future no matter who you're traveling with :)

All this is typical EK. I've been EK Gold for several years, but won't be next year, as the "enhancements" to their FF program has killed it for me. EK can be fine when there are no irregular operations or anything out of the ordinary, but otherwise they can be hopeless, as I've discovered from time to time. Not a major problem for me as I fly on my own with only a carry-on, and I've flown EK many times and transitted DXB many times, but for the first-time traveller on EK it might be a bit traumatic.

FWIW I had a great trip on EK to FCO and back (via SIN, CMB and DXB) a few weeks ago. and it was the best Y-class trip to Europe I ever had. On every flight (8 of them) there was at least one empty seat next to me, and on the SIN-MEL leg I was op-upgraded to J class.

But, as pointed out throughout this thread EK can be very bad too.
