I thought the airport was meant to be completed. Last month there were areas boarded up near the entry to Customs so it resembled a rabbit warren. No clear signage so I really had no idea where I was heading but an employee pointed me in the direction of priority processing which I w

Yes it was completed. It seems they are renovating the immigration area, although it is Thailand, you never know, the boarded up rabbit warren could actually be the permanent solution :)

I've never had a remote stand at BKK on SQ. However on TG (usually from domestic or SIN) I would get remote stand about 50% of time.

BKK is one the airports I love to hate, not because it is bad per se (there are many worse airports), but because it should be better. Goodness knows what it would be like if all the Air Asia flights (and sundry other LCC flights) weren't moved to DMK.

It would be one of the few modern airports where a same terminal transfer from dom->intl can be almost impossible within an hour, despite having boarding pass already and fast track clearance of security and immigration via APEC card. On one trip, where my flight from Khon Kaen landed almost an hour late, reducing my connection time to just over an hour ... the plane taxied to the furthest point on the airport (it felt like we taxied half way to downtown Bangkok after landing), waited for buses for a few minutes, then had the long ride back to the terminal, with the obligatory entry door drive past, uturn and then back to door. Proceeded through airport exit, made my way up to departures winding up the escalators, then through fast track. Of course my SQ flight was at a gate only a mere 50m away from immigration. But, being BKK there is no short cut and its another 250m to get to D gate entry point, and another 250m back to actual gate . 1 hour after landing I finally boarded SQ plane and they closed the doors ....

Once I actually climbed the steps from dom. arrival straight to departures (took about 1 minute), but because you are airside of security, they won't let you pass from secure side to non-secure side  and have to go through normal airport exit and wind way back which takes 5+ minutes.
