I was very happy today when I spoke to the finance dude at my car dealership (that i'm obviously buying my new car through.

The conversation went something like this:

Me: "So I have to pay xx_x for the deposit?"
Him: "Yes that's right"
Me: "I don't suppose I'd be able to pay that via credit card would I?"
Him: "Sure we can do that for you, either Amex, MasterCard or Visa"
Me: "Oh that's great thanks so much"

So, they're letting me put what amounts to be around 15% deposit on the car, on my Amex, with 0% surcharge, without me even needing to negotiate.

I asked half tongue-in-cheek, and was 'warmly welcomed' in every sense of the word.

They're obviously making too much cash off me when it was so easily offered:)

Yes I was able to do this with my deposit as well about 7 years ago.

Deposit was only a measly $1000 though.

Unfortunately they wouldn't let me use CC for the balance - :(

Have used my credit card (Diners in those days) to pay the balance of a car purchase. It did though cost me 1/2 the merchant fees, a few hundred $$, as part of the negiotations. However was still worth about 30,000 points to me now defunct Ansett frequent flyer account

Yeah at the start of the year i bought a car with credit cards, had to split it across a Woolworths card and an ANZ visa as the Woolworths card didn't have a big enough limit... Pity the ANZ visa only had 0.5 points per $1 while the Woolworths had 1 point per $1... But still got a tidy few points... Had to pay 1% merchant fee for paying by credit card, although if i had threaten to walk out the yard they probably would have dropped it, but this was less than i expected as was originally quoted 2% by another car dealership...

Hmm, if they don't balk and you don't need to negotiate on the surcharge, I would be concerned that I had not struck the sharpest price possible for the purchase.

Now see if you can pop in a few days later and pay a little more "deposit" - say another 10%? Or maybe 15%? Ahh, why not just do 20% and be done :p. Then a few days later ...

When i bought my new car i paid the deposit on my CC no issue with the surcharge.

When i went to pick it up and i had to pay for the extras that i had fitted such as nudge bar/ driving lights mats and window tinting all up app 3K then they said there was a surcharge.

I very politely showed them the quote which did not mention a CC surcharge for the extras and a few words happened.

The actually car had already been paid for by the leasing company.

The finance manager came out and said I have to sign acceptance form to pick up the car otherwise they don't get paid for the car.

Surcharge didn't end up happening as would not sign pick up until surcharge was sorted.

I too was a little concerned, but, the people who do the finance/deposit are different to the sales guys (It's a new car) Unless they know how much 'fat' is in the price (they have no list of my options on the car either, they just know the model of it), i'd like to think they're just being nice (yeah I know, a car yard being nice is a contradiction in terms!).

I managed to negotiate what I *thought* was a good deal, and after the joy of 'woo more FF points with no surcharge' wore off I thought 'hey! wonder if i've been jibbed!'. I've come to the conclusion that I got a good deal in the first place (around 17% off the RRP of the car and a loan car for up to 3 weeks prior to delivery included) so I should just be happy with that.

As my dad says, the best deal is one that wins for everybody, or in this case, as long as you think you've won!

Ahh love your thinking ;) If only!

Yes, the thing to do is to negotiate a price, confirm that you can pay on credit card, then ask how much of a discount you can get for cash. They'll give you the discount, because otherwise they have to pay the credit card fee.

Without knowing drewbles I am going to guess that he bought a VW .... probably at least a Golf GTI, and maybe a Golf R. This is because he was trying to sell his WRX recently - and you don't downgrade to something slower!

Correct (on the selling the car part).
Incorrect (on the Golf or any VW for that matter; they're not really to my taste, even though they are excellent vehicles).

I pick up my car on Friday. Don't want everyone in Melbourne to know who I am on the road (the personalised plates may give me away, and no, it's not 'DREWBLES' :P)
