Dealers like credit card as a form of deposit. It is better that they get a signed contract with a paid 'consideration' before the prospect walks out of the showroom.

The last couple of new cars I have purchased I have been using a car broker. They have the industry contacts and have saved me 10% off my best price that I had negotiated. Problem is I only negotiate one car deal each year, the sellers do many per day.

My dad actually paid for an entire car on card with no surcharge. Mind you it was the second car he'd bought from the same dealer in 3 months and had paid cash for the first car.

Correct (on the selling the car part).
Incorrect (on the Golf or any VW for that matter; they're not really to my taste, even though they are excellent vehicles).

I pick up my car on Friday. Don't want everyone in Melbourne to know who I am on the road (the personalised plates may give me away, and no, it's not 'DREWBLES' :P)

As a Subaru Liberty GT driver (the elderly person's WRX ), he may have gone up to
a WRX STI - or maybe the coy boy has gone totally exotic!

Should explain I put a grand down at signing 4 months ago. This is a balance pay out, which would have been the old car value if it had been traded in (i got more via private sale than they could offer as a trade). There is still a financed component.

I've ditched Subaru. I'm sick of them falling into the mainstream with their design for the WRX. I've gone to a euro brand :)

And that's not mainstream?! I don't mind - as long as it goes as fast or faster (or, more correctly, gets to going fast as fast or, preferably, even faster ).

It's a Skoda ;)
Damn! You're on to me ;)

Subaru used to keep their WRX ranges unique and non mainstream, it's why I liked them. Now,they look like every hot hatch, and the sedan looks like a Hyundai and aToyota had a love child.

I've gone mainstream but I've gone high end model of which there are very few around, and has similar performance to the WRX without being a racerboi car. It also is full of niceties that the WRX just does not offer.

Guys, if we keep working on him he'll eventually 'fess up to what this thing is!. What I really want, as an elderly fella, is an STI -but without the racerboi wing.

Won't happen :p

Can't you order one without the wing?

Must confess, I hadn't thought to ask; thought that's how they came . Maybe at next vehicle changeover time I will check. The older I get, the more irrational I'm likely to become. Hope you enjoy the Skoda... I hear they are very good (for something).

Is it not more the case is that every "hot hatch" now looks like a WRX? :p

I hear they're great for taking the piss out of on Top Gear (several years ago many of the hosts were buying each other Skoda branded things as prank Christmas gifts).

Nah. The old WRX's were great. They stopped being great after mine IMHO (excluding the MY00/01 bug-eye one, which at least they realised they made a mistake and changed it to something different).

My First WRX (MY98; not my car just a pic of one):

My second WRX (MY06; not my car, just a pic of one):

Current WRX (MY11):

It looks like a Hyundai Elantra IMHO.

And my new car (Yes, i'll give in..):

OK so it's got a few miles on the clock, but it's a chick-magnet (geddit? huh huh huh??)

*edit*
It also pulls the birds ;)

And best of all is when the various departments don't communicate too well. Financing a car (through company), and they want a deposit - use the Amex, no surcharge - but the intent is to finance the whole amount, so the deposit is refunded - but not back to the Amex, instead they issue a cheque. No guesses needed that the deposit is as large as I think I could get away with (and the refund comes back before the bill is due).

I don't think points come much easier than that.

You've been had! I recognise that car. It's the cough V10 model with the single turbo that just last week in Europe was superseded by the CrUd bi-supercharged V12 with the red-inlaid triple over-stitched leather seats made from the hides of the three last fat-bellied lemurs on earth.

No wonder the dealer was happy to let you use your CC to pay! It was a run-out .

Now 'fess up!

Don't be embarrassed ok?
