Decided I wanted to have a weekend in Melbourne to use up my free flight wit the Amex platinum edge card.

Booking for the 27th April I wasn't sure if they would cover it with the free flight since i was expecting them to maybe only have a restricted set of flights.

Quite happy to get the times I wanted - booking it would have cost me $250. Not a bad return for a $149 credit card.

5 minute booking process. Too easy.

Always good to be able to share a positive story

Just need T or R class availability to book the 'free' flight.

FWIW, T appears to be pretty much available most of the time.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Will keep that in mind. Now if I could just get the flight to count to help me get some SCs for my Gold run later in the year.

I was told by the CSR when I booked my first flight that as long as Saver fares are available
(which is most of the time), you'll get a seat. In my case, my MEL-BNE return fare was $450! Great value for a last minute holiday!

Same experience here AdMEL, am quite happy with the Plat Edge at the moment.

Is your happiness diminished now that Amex have halved the point earn for utilities, govt and insurance? As I posted in another thread, many of those I pay don't accept Amex anyway.

what do u mean??

i have a citibusiness card for most non supermarket / petrol transactions. got me parents n brother some sup cards too so we're banking all the points for a scotland holiday in a few year.

AdMel,

Not too phased by the changes to be honest, still a little annoying however.

I paid AAMI home insurance last year to receive bonus points. I wonder if Amex will run another similar promotion and if it will credit as 0.5pts/$1...

Free flight is great for use during school holiday flights or for last minute getaways. Worth paying annual fee just for the return flight annually. It'll be interesting if u tried to cancel whether they will offer annual fee waiver plus bonus free flight.

I read that and initially thought, time to change but frankly only use this paricular AMEX for the supermarkets, gas and bonus partners anyway. Amazing they gave 11 points for AAMI last year and soon to be .5, guess I won't be using Amex Edge for that this year. It does make it marginally more unattractive when it comes to renewal, I may just go for the Reserve next year and get a flight to NZ.

I have a complimentary Westpac Altitude Gold AMEX and Mastercard that came with my home loan package. I will probably use AAMI and utilities with my westpac amex. Do the Bank's AMEX follow suit for 0.5? I hope not.

Amex complimentary flight is awesome.
I had an Engineering reserve card, and book a flight for my friend from Syd to Per during eastern holiday. All done in 5 minutes. Amex service is the best that I have ever dealt, esp the platinum level.
Now I have got a edge card as well. Will keep using it.

Just keep in mind with the flights to NZ that you can only redeem on Virgin metal, so since the Trans-Tasman tie-up with AirNZ the options have reduced quite a bit unfortunately. It's still better than nothing, but SYD-WLG is gone now and SYD-AKL is reduced to 6 flights a week at pretty ordinary times in each direction for a couple of examples.
