I'd booked a flight with SQ - LAX-NRT..KIX-SIN and decided I wanted to fly out a bit earlier and head to KUL for a couple of days as well.

Since the booking was from the USA was told I had to call the US as it wouldn't let me change online - even though the ticket allowed changes.

30 mins later and I'm told it will cost me around $3000. So don't bother.

Just for fun I go do a dummy booking online for LAX-NRT...KIX.KUL and the price comes in around $805 USD.

My original ticket had been over $900, so even with the $100 cancellation fee SQ were basically paying me to cancel adn rebook, and when I had orig looked at that routing a couple of months ago it would have cost me closer to $1200

Just glad SQ has a reasonable cancellation cost for their tickets.

I have been in a similar positions too. Once even at the actual airline office. I pointed out it was cheaper to just cancel and re-book and they agreed. And that's what I did. (and due to currency fluctuations, that time, I even made a small profit). Silly rules but... they seem to exist everywhere.

Yes.

Sometimes it pays to be a lateral thinker and explore less obvious ways of achieving what you want.

I sort of feel the SQ staff should have pointed me in that direction, but I suppose at the end of the day airlines are a bit like the banks where they try to get as much money out of you witht he least amount of effort involved.
