The American Express Platinum Card - free lounge access

Interesting experience today - I understood that all platinum card members, basic and supp, have free amex lounge access in australia, plus 2 guests and children (2-17). I was informed that only basic member has complimentary access and the 2 supp card holders counted as 2 guests --- that was fine for us today, but I didn't think that was correct

However, when I look at Amex Australia site, this info appears to be correct but it seems different to what I've read in the past (and the older postings in this thread) and I also notice amex has updated their membership t and c in mid-nov.

Have I missed something or have they changed the rules because they can, since access rules can be changed without notice??

in addition, I realise I'm a bit unclear whether they meant only basic card holder + 2 has access, or any of the card holders + 2 have access, but in essence, the card gets in 3 adults max, irrelevant of number of supp cards

I seem to remember the T&Cs being Cardholder rather than Member previously.
Hope they are not too officious on this as do sometimes travel with 19yo and m-i-l who both have supps

Can I ask how the lounge knew it was a supplementary card?

Did they swipe it and it was denied?

They were very officious. I presented 2 cards and they asked if they were on the one account, which I said yes to - I was confident it didn't matter, but I was wrong. We all got in though, although then they debated whether my 17 year old fitted into the 2-17 rule.

Reading the latest terms, I think they've changed definitions - ie access to lounge now refers to card member which terms seems to define as primary care holder --- however if there's 3 of you in total, then you will all get in on one card

Helpful to know. We were originally going to travel from SYD in Jan as a family of 7 (4 adults, 3 children 1 primary 3 supps) but ended up connecting in BNE so moot this time

These are the conditions I see. Each card member, main and supp. No mention of guests for the International lounges though.

However when looking up say the SYD Amex lounge it says.

This to me is quite clear. All card members are allowed two guests. Where is this stated otherwise?

Actually, I don't think it states that clearly - the general blurb refers to primary and supp but doesn't clearly spell out if each gets 2 guests - it seems to imply that supp member gets in but they (sydney) were very definite that the 1 Plat account gets a max of 3 adults in, irrelevant of supp cards

If you go to amex aust website, click on Plat card, and read terms at bottom, it outlines how Plat card members gets 2 guests, and then when you download full t and c's from mid-nov, it defines card member as primary card holder - sorry I can't easily post link from where I am

Hopefully I'm wrong although your post raises an even more interesting point - Im sure it used to say 2 guests AND family but it clearly says OR

Came across this website which I think it definitely worth bookmarking...

Enter the airport and see all the lounge options and how many guests are allowed...

American Express

Can Confirm..
Got 6 people into Mel AMEX lounge with PC and supps. Card holder and 2 adult children and 2 u18 children were OK - but lounge swiped 3 cards (primary + 2 supps) for the original 5 guest. Insisted that My wife had to come in on another card (Thanks Westpac Amex :))
For Virgin - all plat cards seemed equal at brisbane - had to be flying virgin, and each card (primary and supps) were good for one flyer and 1 guest.
