The Best Part of Flying

I have my in ear, noise reduction headphones on and I'm listening to Disc 1 - Track 3 "Deform to Form a Star" from Steven Wilson's fantastic album "Grace for Drowning", and I am staring out the window, watching the sunset as the plane flies above the clouds.

Its a little bit self-indulgent but what I really like about long-haul flying is having some chill out time. I don't have to talk, can watch/listen to what I like and not have to think too hard for hours.

The settling in to your seat, and the feeling I am leaving my worries behind albeit temporarily (my travel is leisure only)
Arriving into your own home(hotel room) away from home for however many days.

Take off has always been exhilarating. Gets my full attention.
1 - 16 hours of guilt free downtime (BNE syd or syd DFW)
Love the food, even Y, and then it only gets better, plus J & F wine. Dessert with a glass of sticky as I settle in for the night.
Window seat for enjoying Flying over outback / desert if in US, in daylight. Glaciers, volcanos over Alaska / Greenland. Clouds are spectacular if that's how the weather has turned out. Can never have too many pics of clouds. Every one is different. Any one else notice that?
Turbulence to rock me off to sleep, + Eagles / Pink Floyd / Best of Queen / Rachmaninov at good volume.
Landing is always welcome too.

the thing i hate most is when you land that you have a heap of voice mail messages and e mails.

I love the whole experience. Yes the planning, getting the fare (i.e. the FASA many months out ), researching where I am going, the trip to the airport, the check in and lounge experience (F lounges really improve this), and so on.

Take off is always fun and sometimes I am amazed at how far the plane has to drive to get to the runway. SYD and NRT seem to have very long drives to and from their respective terminals.

People watching is always fun, who is travelling for what reason, seeing people parting in sadness, or meeting in great joy.

The FAs who have seen it all before but still seem to have the enthusiasm when a pax is excited.

As others have stated, I also like night landings on a clear night with little or no wind.

I'll never forget coming into Cairo just after dark and seeing the Pyramids lit up.

Enjoying the view as the plane is coming to land between (say) 1,000 feet and touchdown [and knowing that we've made it].

Having just watched Die Hard 2 I must say that a safe landing is best!

Being a self funded leisure traveller I do enjoy the trip planning with plenty of research. Priority check-in & boarding are a nice bonus and it's important to relax in the lounge. On board take off is always fun and once in the air I enjoy some peace & quiet so my noise cancelling headphones are worth their weight in gold.. no crying babies in my zone. If fortunate enough to be flying in premium or business there's plenty of indulging in the f & b available. A couple of hours sleep if long haul & then either seeing the sunrise or a well-lit city at night.
