I'm booking a return flight to the UK next year, my last two trips have been with Qantas through which I have gained a number of FF points. I've just redeemed these for two return flights to Hong Kong so I need to start accumulating again.

Question is - is it worth paying the $250 more to fly with Qantas then to fly with Emirates? Flight times are better with Emirates and I won't end up on ageing 747 as per my last trip in August.
Thoughts?

do you have status?
do you want status?
do you want better flight times?
do you want newer planes?
do you want to be unaustralian?

only you can answer these question. So only you could know if it's worth it or not.

Preference would be to fly Qantas (despite some poor service too) to achieve better status, if I could get the A380 both ways with better times then the extra $250 wouldn't come into it.

If I was being loyal I'd be flying BA ;)

And I guess that makes you by default unaustralian ;)

Are you flying whY or J?

Please don't pull the patriotism card out on us..... Qantas has been quite happy to take undue advantage of its Australian customers when it could, but now expects us to be loyal and support them in their hour of need. Give me a break!!

To the OP, be patriotic and fly BA as to fly is to serve!

I have split loyalties and passports for each, i'd take Qantas over BA.
EconomY.

I'd take QF over BA in whY.

I couldn't even get a paper menu in whY+ on BA (and a blank stare and a repeated "chicken or beef" when I asked for more detail on the meal choices).

If it's after the introduction of the A380 to HKG - I'd differently go QF.

Other than that I'd still go QF, but thats due to WP benefits;)

In economy I would take whatever airline you had a better chance getting a points upgrade on ;) Or whatever has the shortest flight time.

For the record I have two passports also. I don't consider not flying on Qantas unaustralian (is that a triple negative?) - it is not owned by the Australian nation (although it is owned by Australians) and curiously if shares in QF are owned by a foreign owned Super fund then is that even less Australian ownership (largest major shareholder is JP Morgan I think).

Me personally, it mostly comes down to price and unfortunately Qantas does come close in those stakes... I don't chase status because i don't fly enough to make it anywhere near SG and PS doesn't interest me... Flight times, as long as they aren't horrendous don't bother me, so that doesn't come into the equation... If i had lounge membership with either of the main two alliances that might be a deciding factor on the types of airlines i would fly, but i would still choose the cheapest either in OW or *A... If not worrying about lounges, its just the cheapest option as point are just bonus on top for me, i am not really prepared to spend over and above to earn them because they usually aren't worth it in terms of what you get back from them... But that is just me...

Some of us go chasing ageing 747's over eeek!380's (the only aircraft named after a failed Mitsubishi model)

How dare you be so blasphemous.... dont you know this site is strictly for people passionate about flying, attaining high airline status and looking down on you from their first class lounge (whilst flying on a $40 JQ price matched ticket)??
You will hung, drawn and quartered if you speak like that again!! :)

LOL. Im sure thats EXACTLY what Airbus was going for when they named their flagship!!

When I book flights I always try and stay on QF but they have to be competitive in price and also times have to work for me.

In Feb I flew to HKG with CX as the flight times met our needs perfectly.

Cost us more $$$$ but i had work commitments in TSV the morning after we got back home to BNE.

We got home from HKG at midnight and next morning I went to TSV at 6.40am.

And the job was completed that day and all extra cost well and truly recovered.
