The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Thought experiment:

Pfizer needs to be thawed and then reconstituted into solution
Once in solution it cannot be stored and has to be given within a certain period of time.
At the end of the day there may be a few spare jabs left because the last vial of the day needed to be thawed and reconstituted but the number of people vaxxed is less than the number of available jabs in the vial.
The remaining doses either get thrown out or given to last minute Vaccine visitors having their first or second jabs

Or what is the other possibility?
They said tonight Moderna had to be dispensed within 6 hours. 10 dose vial. So chemists are going to be offering ‘spares’ to walk ins.

Nope not the “alternative” I was referring to. Last minute walk ins have always existed that mitigated waste. Another alternative. Suggest reread my post. The hint is the comment I was referring to.
Don't reconstitute?

Boosters?

The usual booking system means that number of bookings = number of jabs without wastage.

However sometimes people don’t turn up.
Sounds like what the airlines have to contend with.

An airline style overbooking system come with pros and cons. 2 imperatives - vaccination and no wastage. Not mutually exclusive.

Nationally we should reach 50% fully vaccinated for 16+ when today's numbers are released tomorrow and 75% first dose the day after.

Over 1 in 5 (21.31%) of 12-15 year-olds have had their first dose.

60-64 has reached 60.3% fully vaccinated. Every age group 50-54 and up has gone past 60% fully vaccinated.

50-54 is the second age group to go past 1 million fully vaccinated.

35-39 has 69.4% with a first dose and should go past 70% first dose when today's numbers are released tomorrow.

16-19 has 49.3% with a first dose. When today's numbers are released tomorrow every age group 16-19 and up should be past 50% first dose.

VIC has 75.37% first dose for 16+.

70% of 50+ in TAS are fully vaccinated.

80.42% of 50+ in WA have had their first dose.

89.95% of 70+ in SA have had their first dose and 69.73% have had their second. When today's numbers are released tomorrow those numbers should go past 90% and 70% respectively.

The preliminary announcement

Some Australians will need third COVID vaccine, ATAGI says

ATAGI says some Australians will likely need a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine but has stopped short of recommending widespread booster shots.

The vaccine advisory body anticipates severely immunocompromised people may require a third jab to be best protected from the virus.

While some countries are beginning booster programs for older and more vulnerable populations, ATAGI says it is still looking at issues like timing, safety and efficacy of boosters.

The group says it will likely provide further advice on the subject next month.

That timing makes sense. Once we have enough vaccine for everyone who hasn't yet had one to pick and choose which type they want we should be able to start a booster program in a limited way at first. Not only immunocompromised, but also aged care residents and frontline health workers I suspect will be among the first groups to be considered for boosters.

TGA have told QLD/NRL they can't give out free tickets in return for vaccines. QLD very angry!

Edit - they can give them for second jabs, not first jabs.

ScoMo, last minute walk ins.
And who else.

(The jab is sitting there and about to be discarded if no one wants it and while there is talk of 3 jabs there is no official recommendation)

I’m willing to bet Scomo has been secretly boosted already…..

Although it would be a terrible look if that leaked…

SIL who administers vaccines at one of Adelaides major hubs has said they are extremely busy and she alone administers 75 vaccines a day, up from 50. Over a 7.5 hour shift. She aims for a record number each shift.

50.15% fully vaccinated for 16+. Considering this includes 16 and 17 year-olds that won't turn 18 before the next election and will be ineligible to vote this means clearly over half of voters are fully vaccinated. Though only ACT, NSW and TAS are past 50% with NT so close at 49.96%. Anyway this is positive progress. We are getting closer to the finishing line.

74.83% of 16+ have had their first dose. This should go past 75% when today's numbers are released tomorrow.

70.3% of 35-39 have had their first dose. Every age group 35-39 and up is past 70% first dose.

50.7% of 16-19 year olds have had their first dose. Every age group 16-19 and up has over 50% with a first dose. So over half of voters of every age group have some degree of vaccination protection against COVID-19.

VIC is at 76.31% first dose and 46.57% fully vaccinated. Today's numbers released tomorrow will be interesting with today being a public holiday. A public holiday at this point is probably not helpful for the rollout but we will see.

69.98% of 50+ in VIC are fully vaccinated so that will go past 70% when today's numbers are released tomorrow.

NSW is at 84.66% first dose for 16+ and should go past an incredible 85% first dose when today's numbers are released tomorrow. Over the weekend NSW may reach 60% fully vaccinated for 16+ (currently 57.83%). Most likely when Sunday's numbers are released on Monday or the day after.

In VIC we now have 60% of 45-49 fully vaccinated. Every age group 45-49 and up has reached 60% fully vaccinated. 58.82% of 40-44 are fully vaccinated, but only 27.15% of 35-39 year-olds.

59.32% of 16-19 year-olds in VIC have had their first dose and 8.55% are fully vaccinated. This means over 50% of 16-19 year-olds in VIC have had their first dose but not their second.
