The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Nationally, Primary Care were all briefed last night on the AZ rollout :)

There are several tranches being ramped up over next few weeks.

A bit like a flight , you don't jump straight from boarding to cruising altitude, there's doors closing, pushback, taxi, takeoff, climb ... hopefully all done without hiccup and no warning lights coming on ....
This is going to be a loooooooooong flight. 🤭

A Gold Coast nurse had to be rushed to hospital after she went into anaphylactic shock shortly after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine today.

The nurse, who has a history of anaphylaxis, suffered a reaction after they were given the Pfizer vaccine at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Queensland Health confirmed the person was given the appropriate medical care and recovered quickly

Most of the doses of this vaccine for Australia will be produced here, but it will be a while before those doses are ready.

Thank goodness. Heard today a chief reason that UK has done so well Vaccine wise is because of Brexit, allowing them to negotiate their own contracts and supplies as opposed to Europe who are still bogged down in bureaucratic bs.

Actually, Not even 90 AZ today but 40.

Australia really ought to have had locally made AZ ready on the day the TGA approved it for use. CsL had pretty much guaranteed sales, should have started making and storing them back in Dec, given formula was already in use overseas by then.

Also why there ought to be a grant to get a local manufacturing facility for newer MRNA vaccines here in Aus, to ensure supply for us and our pacific neighbours. Some local competition would be a good thing for employment too.

Won’t impact much really.

But what goes around comes around Italy.... that’s an awful lot of bad karma you’ve put out there...

Just reading the UK feed about this story and boy are they slamming Italy and EU and full of support for Australia.

Though, can you really blame them. Their need is much greater than ours with over 250 people dying each and every day. Adjusting that to Australia's population, that would be 100 people dying per day.

I’m pretty sure they did start the process to manufacture last year, maybe even before December. Building and testing the manufacturing line as just a start. Normally the path to manufacture a new drug in Australia wouldn’t start until after TGA approval, which if you remember, was only a week or two ago. I think it’s a superb effort.

AZ production in Melbourne has not just been a matter of turning a tap on.

That first part — the growing, harvesting and freezing — takes place over about six weeks at CSL's Broadmeadows site.

The next six weeks involves diluting the vaccine to the correct concentration, packaging it up, tonnes of testing and getting it ready to be sent to clinics for use. This is dubbed "fill and finish" and will be done at the Parkville facility, 14km south of Broadmeadows, starting next week.

Three months to grow a dose.

And,

Despite getting the production line up and running in a few months — a process that would normally take the best part of a year and a half — it's still early days for CSL. The first couple of batches didn't yield as much adenovirus as expected.

Great effort to get this local facility up and running.

You don’t think they are attempting to conjure these vaccine supplies up in about a month do you? I think it’s a superb effort.

Agree. It takes three months to grow a dose. And they had to fastrack building the production facility first.

Most definitely agree.

Italy and EU are acting farcically.

They didn’t want to give it to over 65s initially as per their approval guidelines.

Now they have changed their mind so hence it makes sense to block the delivery leaving the EU now.

If they had to set up an entire new facility (despite fact CSL already make similar vaccines on shore, as AZ is older technology) the question remains why we didnt also opt for a facility that could do newer vaccine types?

The forseeable demand was and remains huge, maybe one of the states will try and attract another company to establish an mrna capable facility. Having a single vaccinemanufacture site in one state for all our national supply is also a huge risk.

Whilst tga approval takes time, there was no real reason we shouldnt have planned to start making az doses the same time that the UK. Shameour AZ supply is coming from EU and not UK facility, as EU cant block UK exports.

Drug and vaccine security is right up there with food security, we need more than one onshore option.

When Australia sells its excess AZ doses later this year it should be to pacific neighbours first, will be funny if EU later try to buy from us after blocking our supply.
