The Future for the Qantas 747

Indeed, anything is possible, and we may see A380's on domestic duty someday as well. Still, I don't think we will be seeing 744's regularly on the transcon's for the time being.

Slightly OT. A family acquaintance who is involved with Virgin said there is some possibility of the V Australia 777 doing transcons to save on layover costs at Sydney/Macquarie Airport.

Considering that QF are introducing services to South America and incresaing frequency to South Africa I doubt that any 744's will appear on domestic sectors.

I'm tossing up at the moment whether to make my next trip on the A380 to LAX or the new Qantas non-stop to Argentina. Both would be fun trips to try.
By the way, does anyone know how long it will take to fly non-stop from Sydney to Buenos Aires?

A dummy booking on the QF website gives us QF 17 SYD-EZE at 13 hours. The return is a little longer at 14:40.

Okay. That's not as far as I expected.

Talking another look at my world map... I'll put my glasses on this time :)

Definately woul do SYD-LAX (on 380) before doing SYD-EZE on 744 if doing fly in/fly out.

BUT

Which CITY would you rahter have time in? I'd rather have a week in EZE than LAX.

I could fly into one and out of the other... best of both worlds :p I would most likely have to put up with an AA flight in between Buenos Aires and LAX. Or LAN. And from what I recall the LAN service is much nicer than AA.

note there are no direct flights between EZE and LAX using OneWorld. AA will route you via DFW, MIA or JFK and LAN will route you via LIM or SCL.

Yes... I have done LAN via LIM to SCL to EZE once before. It's a bloody long trip. But either way you go... it is worth the trip to see beautiful Buenos Aires.

Slightly back on track..the future of the 747-400s could well be back on PER and sooner than U think.QF has shown a real willingness to shuffle fleet units around subject to world shocks...think Birdflu/Asian meltdown...post Sep11 (ie AN collapse)..if the current financial crisis gets worse QF would likely retire old 747s as A380 come online 1 for 1 and possible put 2-3 on longhaul Dom routes to retire 767s whilst waiting another 2-3 yrs for 787s..The A330s would replace 767s on the eastcoast..upgrades the product pretty quickly with little cost against DJ trying to go further upmarket.Adds lots more J seats back onto PER and would give QF the flexibility to play with Price whilst offering Skybed.More pressure back on any upgrade to PY they may have in mind. Both those changes allow adding seats without adding frequency ...I may have had a couple of Becks this arvo buts its not as crazy as it sounds...
also on VA 777s on transcons..its a very good idea but causes all sorts of "Product issues" for DJ..They would be better doing SYD-PER-JNB rtn which then helps take some of the pressure off on getting enough rev from SYD JNB soley to make a profit..definitely time for another Becks now
